Abstract

This research investigates the impact of content marketing on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions among online shoppers in Buea, Cameroon, with a particular focus on videos and tutorials, as well as user-generated content (UGC). Content marketing has emerged as a pivotal strategy for engaging consumers and influencing their purchasing decisions, especially in the context of digital media where content can significantly shape consumer perceptions and behavior. This study aims to evaluate how different forms of content marketing affect online shoppers’ attitudes towards brands and their likelihood of making purchases.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative techniques to provide a comprehensive analysis of the impact of content marketing. The quantitative phase involves the distribution of a structured questionnaire to a sample of online shoppers in Buea. This questionnaire is designed to assess several key aspects: the perceived quality and relevance of videos, tutorials, and UGC; changes in consumer attitudes towards brands as a result of engaging with these content types; and the effect of such content on purchase intentions. Respondents are asked about their frequency of engagement with these types of content, their perceptions of content effectiveness in providing valuable information, and the influence of content on their likelihood to make a purchase.

Statistical methods are employed to analyze the survey data, focusing on identifying correlations between the engagement with different types of content and changes in attitudes and purchase intentions. This analysis helps determine how the type and quality of content affect consumer perceptions and purchasing behavior. The qualitative phase complements this by providing deeper insights into consumer experiences with content marketing. In-depth interviews and focus groups are conducted to explore consumer preferences for video tutorials versus UGC, the emotional and psychological impact of these content types, and their influence on buying behavior.

The findings reveal that content marketing significantly impacts consumer attitudes and purchase intentions in Buea. Videos and tutorials are particularly effective in enhancing consumer knowledge and providing clear product demonstrations, which positively influences attitudes towards the brand and increases the likelihood of purchase. Consumers value content that is informative and educational, which aids in making well-informed purchasing decisions. On the other hand, user-generated content, such as reviews and testimonials, builds credibility and trust, further influencing consumer attitudes and boosting purchase intentions. UGC is highly valued for its authenticity, as it reflects genuine feedback from other consumers and enhances trust in the product and brand.

However, the effectiveness of content marketing is contingent upon the quality and relevance of the content. High-quality, relevant content is more likely to positively impact consumer attitudes and purchase intentions compared to content that is perceived as low-quality or irrelevant. Thus, to achieve optimal results, marketers need to ensure that their content meets high standards of quality and addresses the specific needs and preferences of their target audience.

In conclusion, content marketing, including videos, tutorials, and user-generated content, plays a crucial role in shaping consumer attitudes and influencing purchase intentions among online shoppers in Buea. Brands that effectively utilize these content types can engage consumers more successfully, build trust, and drive sales. By focusing on delivering high-quality, relevant content, marketers can enhance consumer perceptions, foster positive attitudes, and increase the likelihood of purchase. This study provides valuable insights for marketers seeking to leverage content marketing to improve their impact on consumer behavior in Buea and similar contexts.
