ABSTRACT

This study examines the ramifications of financial management practices on the progression of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the Buea Municipality. In the dynamic business environment of Buea, SMEs play a crucial role in driving economic growth and employment generation. However, the effectiveness of financial management practices within these enterprises significantly impacts their ability to thrive and expand. Through a comprehensive analysis of financial management strategies and their correlation with SME growth, this research aims to provide valuable insights for SME owners, policymakers, and financial practitioners.

Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, both quantitative and qualitative data are gathered from a sample of SMEs operating in the Buea Municipality. Quantitative analysis involves examining financial statements and performance indicators to assess the implementation and impact of various financial management practices, including budgeting, cash flow management, investment decision-making, and financial reporting. Additionally, qualitative insights are obtained through interviews and focus group discussions with SME owners and financial experts, providing contextual understanding and nuanced perspectives on the relationship between financial management practices and SME growth.

The findings of this study shed light on the significance of effective financial management practices in fostering the growth and sustainability of SMEs in the Buea Municipality. Key factors influencing SME growth, such as access to finance, financial literacy, managerial competence, and external market conditions, are explored in depth. Furthermore, the research identifies challenges and barriers faced by SMEs in implementing sound financial management practices and offers recommendations to address these issues.

This study contributes to the existing literature by offering empirical evidence on the impact of financial management practices on SME growth in the specific context of the Buea Municipality. The insights generated from this research can inform policy interventions aimed at enhancing SME support programs, improving financial education initiatives, and facilitating access to finance for SMEs in Buea and similar settings.

Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute a vital component of the global economy, contributing significantly to employment generation, innovation, and economic growth (Carree & Thurik, 2010). Within the Buea Municipality, SMEs play a crucial role in driving local development and fostering entrepreneurship. However, SMEs face numerous challenges, including limited access to finance, inadequate managerial capacity, and insufficient resources, which hinder their growth potential (Beck et al., 2018).

In recent years, there has been growing recognition of the importance of financial management practices in enhancing the growth and sustainability of SMEs (Berger & Udell, 2006). Effective financial management enables SMEs to optimize their resources, manage cash flows efficiently, and make informed investment decisions (Njuguna & Karanja, 2019). Moreover, sound financial management practices enhance SMEs’ ability to attract external financing and build resilience against economic shocks (Hall & Lerner, 2010).

Despite the critical role of financial management practices in SME development, there is limited research focusing specifically on the context of the Buea Municipality. Understanding the unique challenges and opportunities faced by SMEs in Buea is essential for designing targeted interventions and support mechanisms to foster their growth (Sekaran & Bougie, 2016). Therefore, this study seeks to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of the impact of financial management practices on SME growth within the Buea Municipality.

The Buea Municipality, located in the Southwest Region of Cameroon, is a vibrant economic center characterized by a diverse range of SMEs operating across various sectors, including agriculture, trade, services, and manufacturing (Belleflamme et al., 2014). The municipality’s strategic location, favorable business environment, and access to skilled labor make it an attractive destination for entrepreneurs seeking to establish and grow their businesses (Egbide, 2018). However, SMEs in Buea face several challenges, including limited access to formal financing, inadequate infrastructure, and regulatory constraints (Achidi et al., 2017).

Against this backdrop, examining the impact of financial management practices on SME growth in the Buea Municipality is of paramount importance. By understanding the factors that influence SMEs’ financial management decisions and their implications for growth, policymakers, business support organizations, and financial institutions can develop targeted interventions to address SMEs’ needs and facilitate their development (Kuratko et al., 2015).

Furthermore, given the dynamic nature of the business environment and the evolving challenges faced by SMEs, continuous research and analysis are essential to adapt policies and interventions to changing circumstances (Storey, 2016). Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on SME development in the Buea Municipality by providing evidence-based insights into the role of financial management practices in driving SME growth and sustainability.

In summary, this research seeks to explore the nexus between financial management practices and SME growth within the specific context of the Buea Municipality. By conducting a detailed analysis of the challenges, opportunities, and implications of financial management for SMEs in Buea, this study aims to inform policy decisions, support initiatives, and business strategies aimed at fostering SME development and economic growth in the region.

Statement of the Problem

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the Buea Municipality face numerous challenges in their quest for growth and sustainability, with financial management practices playing a critical role in determining their success (Carree & Thurik, 2010). However, despite the recognized importance of effective financial management, many SMEs in Buea struggle to implement sound financial practices, leading to suboptimal performance and limited growth opportunities (Beck et al., 2018).

One of the primary challenges confronting SMEs in Buea is the lack of access to formal financing and the reliance on informal sources of capital (Achidi et al., 2017). This constraint limits SMEs’ ability to invest in productive assets, expand their operations, and innovate, thereby hindering their growth potential (Berger & Udell, 2006). Additionally, inadequate financial literacy among SME owners and managers further exacerbates the problem, as it impedes their ability to make informed financial decisions and effectively manage their resources (Njuguna & Karanja, 2019).

Furthermore, SMEs in Buea often operate in highly competitive markets characterized by rapid technological changes and evolving consumer preferences (Egbide, 2018). In such environments, SMEs must adopt flexible financial management practices to adapt to changing circumstances and seize growth opportunities (Hall & Lerner, 2010). However, many SMEs lack the necessary financial management skills and systems to navigate these challenges effectively, leading to inefficiencies and missed opportunities (Kuratko et al., 2015).

Moreover, regulatory constraints and bureaucratic procedures pose significant obstacles to SME growth in Buea, particularly concerning access to finance and compliance with taxation and licensing requirements (Carree & Thurik, 2010). SMEs often struggle to navigate complex regulatory frameworks and comply with reporting obligations, diverting their attention and resources away from core business activities (Egbide, 2018).

Given the critical importance of SMEs to the economic development of the Buea Municipality, addressing these challenges is imperative. However, to develop targeted interventions and support mechanisms, it is essential to understand the specific financial management issues faced by SMEs in Buea and their implications for growth. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the following research questions:

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary financial management challenges encountered by SMEs in the Buea Municipality?
  2. How do these challenges impact the growth and sustainability of SMEs in Buea?
  3. What strategies can be employed to overcome these challenges and promote the growth of SMEs in the Buea Municipality?

Objectives:

  1. To identify and analyze the key financial management challenges faced by SMEs operating in the Buea Municipality.
  2. To assess the impact of these financial management challenges on the growth and sustainability of SMEs in Buea.
  3. To recommend strategies and interventions to address the identified challenges and enhance the growth prospects of SMEs in the Buea Municipality.

Hypotheses:

  1. H₀: There is no significant relationship between financial management challenges and SME growth in the Buea Municipality. H₁: Financial management challenges negatively impact SME growth in the Buea Municipality.

  2. H₀: The impact of financial management challenges on SME sustainability is not significant in the Buea Municipality. H₁: Financial management challenges adversely affect the sustainability of SMEs in the Buea Municipality.

  3. H₀: Implementing strategies to address financial management challenges does not lead to improved SME growth prospects in the Buea Municipality. H₁: Implementation of targeted strategies can enhance SME growth prospects by mitigating financial management challenges in the Buea Municipality.

Through testing these hypotheses, this study aims to provide empirical evidence on the relationship between financial management challenges and SME growth in the Buea Municipality and offer practical recommendations for policymakers, business support organizations, and SME owners to address these challenges and foster SME development in the region.
