Abstract

This study investigates the impact of human relations on the job performance of secretaries at NFC Bank in Buea, Cameroon. Human relations, encompassing interpersonal interactions, communication skills, and organizational culture, are critical to understanding how they influence the efficiency, motivation, and overall job performance of secretaries in financial institutions. As secretaries play a pivotal role in the daily operations of banks, understanding the dynamics of human relations in their work environment can provide valuable insights into enhancing their performance and job satisfaction.

The research begins by defining the scope of human relations within the context of financial institutions. Human relations in the workplace involve the quality of interactions between employees and their superiors, colleagues, and clients. Key aspects include communication effectiveness, team cohesion, leadership styles, and conflict resolution. For secretaries, these elements are crucial as they directly impact their ability to perform their duties efficiently and maintain high levels of job satisfaction.

Methodologically, the study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews. Data was collected from secretaries working at NFC Bank, focusing on their perceptions of human relations within their workplace and how these perceptions affect their job performance. Surveys provided quantitative data on general trends and correlations, while interviews offered deeper insights into individual experiences and specific examples of how human relations impact their work.

Findings reveal that positive human relations significantly enhance the job performance of secretaries. Effective communication, supportive management, and a collaborative team environment contribute to higher job satisfaction and better performance. Secretaries who report strong interpersonal relationships and a positive work culture are more likely to excel in their roles, exhibit higher levels of motivation, and perform their duties with greater efficiency. Conversely, negative human relations, such as poor communication and lack of support, are associated with decreased job satisfaction and performance issues.

The study also highlights the role of management in fostering a positive human relations environment. Leadership styles that emphasize open communication, recognition of achievements, and constructive feedback contribute to a more motivated and productive workforce. Secretaries who feel valued and supported by their superiors are more engaged and perform better in their roles. Additionally, effective conflict resolution mechanisms and team-building activities enhance collaboration and reduce workplace stress.

Recommendations for improving human relations at NFC Bank include implementing regular training programs for both management and staff on communication and interpersonal skills, establishing clear channels for feedback and conflict resolution, and promoting a supportive organizational culture. By addressing these areas, NFC Bank can enhance the work environment for its secretaries, leading to improved job performance and overall organizational effectiveness.

In conclusion, the research underscores the significant impact of human relations on the job performance of secretaries at NFC Bank in Buea. Positive human relations contribute to higher job satisfaction and better performance, while negative human relations can hinder effectiveness and motivation. Organizations that invest in fostering strong interpersonal relationships and a supportive work culture will benefit from more efficient and engaged employees, ultimately enhancing overall organizational performance.
