THE IMPACT OF PACKAGING DESIGN ON SALES VOLUME: THE CASE OF SOURCE DU PAYS, MUYUKA, CAMEROON
ABSTRACT
Packaging design plays a crucial role in influencing consumer behavior and boosting sales volume. This study assesses the impact of packaging design on the sales volume of Source du Pays, a prominent bottled water company based in Muyuka, Cameroon. The research aims to analyze how visual elements like color, shape, labeling, and material quality affect consumer purchasing decisions, brand perception, and, ultimately, sales.
A mixed-method approach was employed, combining quantitative sales data with qualitative feedback from consumers and retail distributors. A structured survey was administered to 150 consumers and interviews conducted with 20 retailers to gather insights into their views on the company’s packaging design. Additionally, sales data over the past three years was analyzed to assess any correlation between packaging design changes and sales trends.
The study finds that packaging design significantly influences consumer preference and brand loyalty. Consumers were particularly attracted to bold colors and clear labeling that reflects the purity and freshness of the water. The ergonomic design of the bottle was also seen as a key factor in consumer satisfaction, as it contributed to ease of handling and portability. Additionally, eco-friendly materials were appreciated by consumers concerned with environmental sustainability. However, findings also reveal that excessive packaging, especially plastic use, was frowned upon by environmentally conscious consumers, negatively impacting sales in certain segments.
Retailers emphasized that well-designed packaging encourages impulse buying and increases product visibility on the shelves, directly contributing to sales volume. They noted that during promotional periods, changes in the packaging—such as introducing limited-edition designs—led to a noticeable spike in sales.
However, the study highlights some challenges. While attractive packaging draws attention, it also increases production costs. Source du Pays must balance cost-efficiency with the demand for high-quality packaging. Additionally, the current packaging does not fully appeal to all demographic segments, particularly older consumers who prefer larger, sturdier containers.
To enhance sales performance, the study recommends that Source du Pays should continue to innovate in packaging design, focusing on more sustainable materials and designs that cater to a broader range of consumers. It also suggests periodic redesigns to maintain consumer interest and differentiate the product from competitors.
In conclusion, packaging design has a profound impact on sales volume at Source du Pays. By optimizing packaging elements like color, shape, and sustainability, the company can strengthen brand appeal and boost sales performance.
