Abstract

Pricing strategies are fundamental to influencing consumer decision-making across various industries. This study explores the impact of different pricing strategies on consumer decision-making in Buea Municipality, focusing on how pricing affects consumer behavior, purchasing patterns, and brand loyalty. The research aims to assess the effectiveness of various pricing approaches, such as discount pricing, psychological pricing, value-based pricing, and premium pricing, in shaping consumer preferences and decisions within the local context.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Qualitative data was gathered through in-depth interviews with business owners, managers, and pricing strategists in Buea to understand how pricing strategies are formulated and implemented. Additionally, focus group discussions with consumers provided insights into their perceptions and reactions to different pricing tactics. The quantitative aspect of the study involved surveys distributed to a representative sample of consumers across various economic sectors in Buea, aiming to identify key trends and factors that drive purchasing decisions based on price.

The findings of this research reveal that consumers in Buea Municipality are highly sensitive to pricing, with discount pricing and value-based pricing having the most significant impact on their decision-making process. Many consumers are attracted to discounts and promotional offers, which lead to increased sales volume but can sometimes reduce long-term brand loyalty if not managed effectively. Psychological pricing, such as setting prices just below a round number (e.g., 9,900 FCFA instead of 10,000 FCFA), also positively influences consumer perception, making products seem more affordable.

The study further indicates that premium pricing strategies are effective in attracting affluent customers who associate higher prices with better quality. However, in a price-sensitive market like Buea, businesses need to carefully balance pricing with perceived value to avoid alienating potential customers. Consumer feedback suggests that consistent value-based pricing, where the price reflects the product’s quality and utility, fosters greater loyalty and repeat purchases.

In conclusion, pricing strategies have a profound impact on consumer decision-making in Buea Municipality. Businesses that effectively tailor their pricing strategies to meet consumer expectations and economic conditions can enhance customer satisfaction and drive sales. Future research could explore the long-term effects of pricing strategies on brand loyalty and market share in the region.
