Abstract
This study examines the impact of Quality of Work Life (QWL) on employees’ job performance at the Buea Council in Cameroon. Quality of Work Life refers to the overall well-being of employees in their workplace, which includes factors like job security, work conditions, work-life balance, and opportunities for personal and professional development. Understanding the relationship between QWL and job performance is essential in fostering a productive workforce in public sector organizations like the Buea Council.
A mixed-methods research approach was utilized, combining quantitative surveys distributed to council employees with qualitative interviews conducted with key management personnel. The primary aim was to determine how different QWL factors influence employees’ performance, focusing on aspects such as job satisfaction, efficiency, and commitment to work tasks. The analysis incorporated both statistical evaluation of survey data and thematic analysis of interview responses to draw comprehensive conclusions.
Findings from the research revealed that a high quality of work life positively affects employees’ job performance. Employees who reported higher job satisfaction, better work-life balance, and access to career development opportunities demonstrated higher productivity levels and a greater sense of commitment to their roles. Furthermore, favorable work conditions, including a safe and supportive working environment, were found to significantly enhance job performance by reducing stress and burnout.
Conversely, the study identified several challenges affecting QWL at the Buea Council, including inadequate compensation, limited opportunities for advancement, and poor working conditions in some departments. These issues negatively impacted employee morale and hindered overall job performance. Addressing these challenges, particularly by improving workplace safety, offering competitive salaries, and providing continuous professional development opportunities, was recommended to boost employees’ performance.
In conclusion, the quality of work life plays a critical role in determining job performance at the Buea Council. Enhancing QWL factors such as job security, professional growth opportunities, and workplace conditions will contribute to improved employee performance, ultimately benefiting the council’s overall efficiency and service delivery.
