Abstract
This study investigates the impact of remuneration on employees’ performance at Ecobank Buea, Cameroon. Remuneration, including salaries, bonuses, and other financial incentives, plays a significant role in influencing employee motivation and overall job performance. The research explores how different components of the bank’s remuneration packages affect employees’ productivity and job satisfaction, which in turn impacts the performance of the bank as a whole.
A mixed-method research approach was employed, combining quantitative data from surveys of Ecobank employees and qualitative insights gathered through interviews with management. The study seeks to establish the extent to which remuneration influences employee performance and to examine the perceptions of employees regarding the adequacy and fairness of their compensation. Key aspects of the remuneration package considered in this study include basic salary, bonuses, benefits such as health insurance, and non-financial rewards like recognition and career advancement opportunities.
The findings indicate that competitive and well-structured remuneration packages have a positive impact on employee performance at Ecobank Buea. Employees who feel adequately compensated for their work tend to demonstrate higher levels of motivation, commitment, and productivity. Conversely, issues such as pay disparities, delays in salary payments, and perceived unfairness in the distribution of financial incentives negatively affect employee morale and performance. The study also highlights the importance of non-monetary rewards in enhancing employee satisfaction. Employees who receive recognition for their efforts or who see clear paths for career advancement report higher levels of job satisfaction, which translates to improved performance.
The research concludes that Ecobank Buea can enhance employee performance by addressing key issues in its remuneration practices. Specifically, the bank should strive for greater transparency in its compensation policies, ensure timely payment of salaries, and align its financial incentives with the industry standards in Cameroon. Moreover, non-monetary benefits, such as employee recognition programs and opportunities for professional growth, should be integrated into the bank’s overall employee motivation strategy.
In summary, the study emphasizes the crucial role that remuneration plays in employee performance and suggests that a balanced approach, combining both financial and non-financial rewards, can lead to improved productivity and better overall performance at Ecobank Buea.
