ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of road transport infrastructure on traffic safety in the Buea municipality, located in the South West Region of Cameroon. Road transport infrastructure plays a critical role in facilitating movement, economic activities, and development within a region. However, its quality and design significantly influence traffic safety, which affects residents, commuters, and the overall efficiency of transportation systems. The research aims to assess the condition of the existing road transport infrastructure in Buea, its adequacy in handling traffic, and its role in preventing or contributing to road accidents and unsafe driving conditions.

A mixed-methods approach was adopted, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. Data was obtained through surveys of 120 road users, including drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, along with interviews with officials from the Ministry of Transport and the Buea Council. Traffic accident records from local law enforcement agencies were analyzed to identify trends and the common causes of accidents in relation to road conditions. Key road segments within Buea, such as the Molyko-Mile 17 road, were used as case studies to evaluate the infrastructure’s safety features, including road signs, pedestrian crossings, lighting, and drainage systems.

The findings show a strong correlation between the state of road infrastructure and traffic safety in Buea. Poorly maintained roads, potholes, insufficient road signage, and inadequate pedestrian crossings were identified as major contributors to road accidents. Additionally, the lack of proper street lighting on key roads increased the risk of accidents at night. In areas where the road infrastructure was better developed, such as in parts of central Buea, there was a noticeable reduction in traffic accidents, suggesting that road quality directly impacts safety.

The study also highlights the role of human behavior in traffic safety. While road infrastructure plays a critical role, the behavior of road users, including speeding, non-compliance with traffic laws, and reckless driving, was found to exacerbate the risks posed by inadequate road infrastructure. A combination of poor road conditions and dangerous driving behaviors led to higher accident rates in certain areas, particularly in heavily trafficked zones like Molyko.

The research recommends that local authorities prioritize the upgrading of road infrastructure in accident-prone areas. Investments should be made in improving road surfaces, expanding road capacity, and installing clear road signage and traffic lights. There is also a need for better pedestrian facilities, such as dedicated walkways and pedestrian crossings, to protect non-motorized road users. In addition, traffic safety awareness campaigns should be launched to encourage responsible driving and adherence to traffic regulations.

Improving the road transport infrastructure in Buea municipality is crucial for enhancing traffic safety and reducing accident rates. By addressing both infrastructural inadequacies and promoting safe driving behaviors, the municipality can foster a safer and more efficient transportation system.
