Managing safety and security is critical for socially responsible operations in a globalized supply chain. Stakeholders have become increasingly concerned about safety and security issues in shipping and transport logistics operations. Faced with safety and security risks inherent in global supply chain management, organizations must understand the effectiveness of logistics security practices and their performance contingencies that may influence the effectiveness of such practices. Also, organizations need to take a multi-level approach to examine whether their internal and national contexts would affect accident performance in global operations.
Safety at work is one of the key issues in many organizations. This is because accidents and injuries in the workplace can cost the organization financially and non-financially. Although workplace safety has been widely investigated, less attention is given to the small and medium enterprises. Such neglect is unfortunate because many accidents and injuries around the world, including Cameroon, happen in this organizational milieu. A survey of 74 employees of SMEs in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia was carried out. Self-reported measures were used to obtain data on workplace safety dimensions and safety behavior.
The Government has been pressing companies to improve the safety of their activities in order to reduce society’s loss due to occupational accidents and illnesses. Occupational safety and health is a crucial part of a workplace because every worker has to take care of his/her own safety and health. The main occupational safety and health (OSH) national policy in Malaysia is the enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA, 1994). Only those companies which have excellent health and safety care have good quality and productive employees. This study investigated safety management practices in the logistics sector. Was found that most of the material damage to the paper reels took occurred in the harbor operations, but often the damage was not noticed until the paper reached the final customer. The flow of information, co-operation between the various parties of the chain, and the training of employees have proven to be important in improving the safety of a logistic chain as well as the need to not only examine safety risks within isolated organizational units, but to consider the interactions between causes and effects across the entire chain (Vinni K, 1996).
The safety of a logistics system is understood as ensuring (to a certain level) the implementation of operational logistics processes in any entity, under specific conditions, by using favourable circumstances, taking business challenges, reducing risk, uncertainty and preventing all kinds of threats to logistics activities. The relevant determinant of the management of logistics system safety is appropriate infrastructure, which enables the implementation of logistic processes and guarantees their effectiveness and efficiency. The infrastructure determines logistics performance measured by the logistics performance index (LPI). The aim of the article is to identify the logistics system safety measures in a macro approach and to determine the impact of logistic efficiency on the management of logistics system safety, (Agata Mesjasz-Lech 2019)
Perceived safety management practices in the logistics sector in Cameroon are influenced by a combination of regulatory frameworks, training initiatives, and technological advancements, as well as the overall safety culture within organizations. Despite the existing government policies aimed at enhancing safety standards, compliance often varies among logistics companies due to inconsistent enforcement and limited resources. Employee training programs are critical, yet they may not be universally implemented, resulting in varying levels of safety awareness among workers. Risk assessment practices, including the identification of hazards and the development of mitigation strategies, are essential but can be hindered by inadequate infrastructure and funding. The integration of technology, such as GPS tracking and automated systems, has the potential to improve safety, but its adoption is not uniform across the sector. Furthermore, effective incident reporting and emergency response plans are crucial for minimizing risks, yet many companies struggle with establishing clear protocols. Engaging stakeholders, including government agencies and industry associations, is vital for fostering a collaborative approach to safety, although feedback mechanisms for employees often remain underdeveloped. Overall, while there are efforts to enhance safety management practices in Cameroon’s logistics sector, significant challenges persist that require concerted action to ensure a safer working environment (Kumar S & Sinhh, R2015).
1.2 Statement of the problem
The logistics industry faces significant challenges in ensuring worker safety while maintaining operational efficiency, with the effective utilization of safety equipment emerging as a critical factor. Despite the recognized importance of safety equipment in preventing workplace accidents and injuries, there is a notable gap in understanding the specific impact of safety equipment on logistics efficiency. Existing research often focuses on safety protocols and regulatory compliance, but there is limited exploration of how safety equipment directly influences productivity, workflow, and overall efficiency in logistics operations. This study aims to address this gap by analyzing the impact of safety equipment on logistics efficiency, examining how the provision, utilization, and maintenance of safety equipment such as personal protective equipment (PPE), ergonomic tools, and safety signage contribute to or hinder the smooth operation of logistics activities. By investigating this relationship, the research seeks to provide insights that can inform strategies for optimizing safety equipment use to enhance logistics efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve worker well-being.
