Abstract

The school learning environment plays a crucial role in shaping students’ academic performance. This study examines the impact of the learning environment on the academic performance of students in selected secondary schools in Yaounde City, Cameroon. The learning environment encompasses physical infrastructure, classroom climate, availability of learning resources, teacher-student relationships, and overall school culture. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from academic performance records, attendance rates, and standardized test scores with qualitative insights from interviews and focus group discussions with students, teachers, and school administrators.

Findings indicate that a positive school learning environment significantly enhances students’ academic performance. Key aspects of an effective learning environment include well-maintained physical infrastructure, such as classrooms, libraries, and laboratories, which provide a conducive space for learning. Schools with adequate facilities and resources, such as textbooks, computers, and other learning materials, show higher student engagement and better academic outcomes.

The study also highlights the importance of classroom climate and teacher-student relationships. Classrooms that are welcoming, inclusive, and supportive foster a sense of belonging and motivation among students. Positive teacher-student interactions, characterized by respect, encouragement, and constructive feedback, contribute to students’ academic success. Furthermore, a school culture that promotes academic excellence, discipline, and mutual respect positively influences students’ attitudes towards learning and their overall performance.

Challenges identified in creating an optimal learning environment include overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources, insufficient training for teachers, and inadequate maintenance of school facilities. These issues lead to distractions, reduced individual attention from teachers, and a less engaging learning experience for students.

Recommendations for improving the school learning environment include increasing investment in educational infrastructure and resources, reducing class sizes, and providing ongoing professional development for teachers to enhance their classroom management and instructional skills. Additionally, fostering a positive school culture through the involvement of all stakeholders, including students, parents, teachers, and the community, can further support academic achievement.

In conclusion, the school learning environment has a profound impact on students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Yaounde City. By addressing the identified challenges and implementing the study’s recommendations, schools can create a more conducive and supportive learning environment that promotes academic excellence and student success.
