ABSTRACT
This research study titled “Impact of Socialization on the Academic Performance of University of Bamenda Students with Physical Impairments” aims to investigate the influence of socialization on the academic performance of students with physical impairments at the University of Bamenda. The study formulates three null hypotheses: socialization has no impact on the academic performance of students with disabilities at the University of Bamenda; the interactions between students with physical disabilities and their peer groups, course mates, friends, and neighbors are not complex; and there are no facilities on campus to support the education of students with disabilities. Primary data sources were used for data collection, employing questionnaires for reliability. Descriptive statistics, including tables, charts, and percentages, were used to present data on respondents’ gender, age groups, types of disability, and socialization with peers, course mates, friends, and neighbors. Chi-square analysis was conducted to examine the relationship between socialization and academic performance. The findings indicate a positive relationship between socialization and academic performance at the University of Bamenda.
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.1. Introduction
This chapter introduces the background of the study, research problem, research objectives, research questions, research hypotheses, and the significance of the study to the researchers and the university community.
1.2. Background to the Study
Socialization, the process of internalizing societal norms and ideologies, plays a significant role in human development and learning. It is crucial for individuals to have social experiences to acquire culture and thrive. Socialization influences human beliefs and behaviors by shaping their views based on societal consensus. However, it is recognized that both social influences and genetics contribute to human characteristics. Education, considered a valuable virtue, has been prioritized by national and international organizations. The transmission of society’s norms and values is a major function of education. Therefore, education should be inclusive and accessible to all learners, regardless of their impairments.
Inclusive schooling, which involves modifying the regular school environment, classrooms, and teaching methods to accommodate all learners, has gained recognition as a way to promote the inclusion of people with disabilities. Social interaction plays a vital role in fostering inclusivity, allowing learners with disabilities to enroll in public schools and improve their academic performance. Learners with physical impairments face various challenges, such as communication barriers and limited access to school resources, which can result in isolation and hinder their socialization. Socialization can enhance their hearing ability, language skills, self-esteem, and self-actualization.
1.3. Problem Statement
Students with physical impairments often experience withdrawal and isolation due to communication barriers, visual defects, and an unfriendly school environment that lacks accessibility. Limited socialization negatively impacts their self-esteem, confidence, and academic performance in inclusive settings. Encouraging socialization of students with physical impairments in public schools and universities is essential to make them comfortable, relevant, and academically competitive with their peers. Socialization promotes self-esteem and self-actualization, which are crucial benefits of inclusive education.
1.4. Research Objectives
1.4.1. Main Objective
