DISCUSSION, CONCLUSION,AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

This chapter deals with discussion in relation to the research in chapter one and the variables of the study. This is followed by conclusion, recommendation and suggestion for further research based on data collected and analyzed.

Discussion of Findings

Research Question One: How does the lecture illustration method affects students’ performance in Geography?

From the finding on table 7.2, it was reported that lecture illustration  method of teaching affects students’ achievement positively. As their performances was average in Government school, Mission School and in Private School with a mean of 14.4 (40%) standard deviation of 2.8and a coefficient variation of 19.4% respectively when this teaching method was used. This is in line with Tambo (2003), who stated that the illustration method greatly influences student performance.

Research question Two: How does the lecture demonstration method in teaching affects student academic performance in Geography?

From the findings on table 7.4, it was reported that the lecture demonstration teaching method affects student achievements negatively as their performance were average when this teaching method was used. That is in Government School, Mission School and in Private School with a mean of 13.7 (40%) standard deviation of 2.5and a coefficient variation of 18% respectively. The respondents agree that the demonstration method increases their learning achievements. This is in line with Arends (1997), Tambo (2003), who stated that the demonstration method greatly influences students’ academic performance.

Research Question Three: How does the cooperative learning method affects students’ performance in Geography?

From the findings on table 7.5, it was reported that cooperative learning method affects students’ achievement positively as their performance were very high when this method was used. That is in Government school, Mission school and in Private school we had a mean of 14.6 (50%) with a standard deviation of 1.8and a coefficient variation of 12.7% respectively. The respondents agree that the cooperative teaching method increases their academic performance. This is line with the view of Seaman and Fellenze (1989), that the cooperative teaching method greatly influences students’ performance.

Conclusions

From the analysis so far, one can conclude that the methods used in Teaching   Geography has a positive impact on students’ academic performance. With the help of this research, I urged teachers to use these teaching methods (cooperating, illustration and demonstration teaching methods) most of the time in schools in order to increase student’s performance in Geography.

Recommendations

From the above results, the following recommendations are made. The students should try to explore all the various teaching methods, in order to facilitate and improve their understanding.

The teachers should do their best while teaching to make sure that students are developed cognitively, effectively wise and psycho-motor domains. And the teachers should also try to use as many teaching methods as possible.

The government on her part should provide the collages with qualified educational personnel’s.

The government should also encourage teachers through motivations, increase salaries, providing them with additional incentives, improves on their working conditions and further provide facilities for professional advancement.

Parents should encourage their children by providing them with educational inputs, like paying all their schools fees, buying text books and exercises books and provide them with uniforms so that they would be encourage to go to school.

Lastly parents should have patience in teaching their children so that the expected outcomes would be seen.

Suggestions for further Research

This research should not have exhausted everything in the field. Thus, possible areas for further research are as follows,

A similar study should be carried out on the other subjects with different variables and at different levels.

An area of study was Buea municipality so it could be carried out in other areas on a large sample size (greater than 60).

Limitations of the Study

This type of research program cannot be carried out successfully without problems; few problems were encountered such as;

Limited time: the researcher could have done something better than this if there had been enough time allocated for the study. The researcher had no time to put in very little for this because the researcher is a student, coupled with other university courses and curricular activities and so reading and preparing for continuous assessment and end of course examination.

The fact that the researcher is a student, it was difficult and tedious to gather enough information needed for the study. This is so because not much has been done on this area of study.

The researcher also faced financial problems. It should be understood that research does not entail sitting one spot and imagining things. It entails a lot of movement to gather information and all this needs money for transportation and other responsibilities like cyber fee, buying of A4 papers, printing etc.

Above all the socio-political problem that is still going on in the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon has created a great tension and fear in the minds of students and teachers. This has made the environment unconducive for a proper research and inadequate studies.
