Abstract

Teenage pregnancies represent a significant social and educational challenge, particularly in secondary schools where they can substantially affect students’ academic and personal lives. This study examines the impact of teenage pregnancies on secondary school students in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. By focusing on how teenage pregnancies influence academic performance, school attendance, and overall student well-being, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue and inform strategies for support and intervention.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach to gather data from a range of sources. The quantitative component involves analyzing academic records, including grades, attendance, and dropout rates of students who have experienced teenage pregnancies compared to their non-pregnant peers. Surveys are distributed to students, teachers, and school administrators to collect information on academic performance, school engagement, and the perceived effects of teenage pregnancies.

Qualitative data is obtained through interviews and focus group discussions with affected students, educators, and school counselors. These discussions explore personal experiences, the social and emotional impacts of teenage pregnancy, and the effectiveness of school policies and support mechanisms. Insights are also gathered on how teenage pregnancies affect students’ interactions with peers and teachers, as well as their overall school experience.

The findings reveal that teenage pregnancies have a profound impact on the academic and social lives of students in Buea Municipality. Pregnant students often face significant challenges, including increased absenteeism, lower academic performance, and a higher likelihood of school dropout. The study identifies several factors contributing to these challenges, such as health complications, social stigma, and the need for childcare responsibilities.

The research also highlights the varying effectiveness of support systems in place within schools. While some institutions offer counseling services, flexible scheduling, and academic support to help pregnant students, these measures are frequently reported as inadequate. The need for more comprehensive and consistent support, including tailored educational programs and resources, is evident from the findings.

In addition to academic impacts, the study finds that teenage pregnancies affect students’ emotional and social well-being. Pregnant students often experience increased stress, social isolation, and difficulties in balancing school responsibilities with parenting duties. The stigma associated with teenage pregnancy further exacerbates these challenges, impacting students’ self-esteem and academic motivation.

In conclusion, teenage pregnancies significantly affect secondary school students in Buea Municipality, with substantial implications for academic performance, school attendance, and personal well-being. To address these challenges, it is recommended that schools and policymakers implement more effective support systems, including enhanced counseling services, flexible educational arrangements, and community outreach programs. By addressing the needs of pregnant students more comprehensively, it is possible to improve their educational outcomes and overall quality of life.
