Abstract

This research explores the impact of the internet on organizational culture within the IT industry in Cameroon. The rapid advancement of internet technologies has transformed communication, collaboration, and workflow processes in modern organizations, especially in the IT sector, where digital connectivity plays a crucial role. Organizational culture, defined by shared values, beliefs, and practices, is influenced by these technological shifts. This study seeks to assess how the internet has reshaped organizational culture, focusing on communication dynamics, employee interaction, decision-making processes, and the overall work environment within IT companies in Cameroon.

A qualitative research approach was employed, with data collected through semi-structured interviews, surveys, and participant observation. Employees and managers from various IT companies across Cameroon were selected as respondents to provide a holistic view of the industry. The study investigated key aspects of organizational culture such as teamwork, leadership styles, communication practices, innovation, and adaptability. The role of the internet in fostering or hindering cultural changes was critically examined, with special emphasis on remote work, virtual teams, and the digitalization of workflows.

Findings from the study indicate that the internet has significantly influenced organizational culture within the IT industry in Cameroon. Communication has become more instant, transparent, and efficient, as employees rely heavily on digital tools such as emails, messaging platforms, and video conferencing. Virtual collaboration has increased, breaking geographical barriers and promoting a more inclusive work environment. However, the study also identified challenges such as reduced face-to-face interaction, which has affected interpersonal relationships and team cohesion. Moreover, the internet has facilitated the decentralization of decision-making processes, allowing for more employee autonomy and flexible leadership approaches.

The research concludes that while the internet has enhanced operational efficiency and innovation within IT companies, it has also presented challenges in maintaining a cohesive organizational culture. Companies need to strike a balance between leveraging internet technologies and preserving the human element of workplace culture. Recommendations include fostering digital literacy, promoting regular in-person interactions, and creating hybrid work models that incorporate both virtual and physical collaboration to maintain a strong organizational culture.
