Abstract
This study examines the impact of digital learning repositories on students’ engagement and satisfaction in selected secondary schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. The integration of digital learning repositories—platforms that store and provide access to educational materials, including videos, e-books, assignments, and interactive content—has become increasingly important in modern education, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. These platforms offer opportunities for personalized learning, enhancing student engagement and overall academic satisfaction.
The research utilizes a mixed-method approach, combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to explore how digital repositories have influenced students’ interaction with learning materials, their motivation, and satisfaction with the learning experience. A sample of 150 students and 20 teachers from five secondary schools in Buea was selected for this study. Data were collected through structured questionnaires focusing on students’ frequency of use, perceived ease of access, engagement with the content, and their overall satisfaction with the learning experience. Additionally, interviews with teachers explored their perspectives on the effectiveness of these repositories in enhancing student participation and motivation.
Findings from the study reveal that digital learning repositories positively impact student engagement. Students who regularly use these repositories reported higher levels of participation in class activities, improved interaction with the content, and greater motivation to complete assignments. The availability of multimedia resources, practice exercises, and instant access to course materials facilitated a more interactive learning experience, fostering deeper understanding and retention of information. Students also indicated that the flexibility of accessing materials at their convenience improved their study habits and time management.
The study further highlights that students’ satisfaction with digital learning repositories is linked to the usability and quality of the resources provided. Repositories offering user-friendly interfaces and well-structured materials were rated higher in terms of satisfaction. However, some challenges were noted, particularly concerning limited access to reliable internet and digital devices, which hindered students’ ability to fully engage with the repositories. This digital divide was more pronounced among students from low-income families, who faced difficulties in accessing online resources, resulting in lower engagement and satisfaction.
Interviews with teachers confirmed the positive impact of digital learning repositories on student participation. Teachers observed that students who actively used the platforms demonstrated greater enthusiasm in class, asked more questions, and completed their assignments with higher accuracy. Teachers also appreciated the ease of assigning and tracking student progress through these platforms, which allowed for better feedback and individualized support. However, they also pointed out the need for further training to effectively integrate digital resources into their teaching strategies.
In conclusion, the use of digital learning repositories has a significant positive impact on students’ engagement and satisfaction in secondary schools in Buea. The flexibility, interactive content, and accessibility of these platforms contribute to improved learning outcomes. However, efforts must be made to bridge the digital divide by ensuring equitable access to technology and training for both students and teachers. The study recommends increased investment in digital infrastructure, teacher training, and the provision of digital devices to students from underprivileged backgrounds to maximize the benefits of digital learning repositories.
