CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
1.0 Background to the Study
Transportation systems are critical components of economic infrastructure, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and people. Efficient transportation networks are associated with enhanced economic productivity and growth, improving access to markets and reducing costs (Rodrigue et al., 2017). Globally, the role of transport is recognized as pivotal in achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 9, which emphasizes the importance of building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization, and fostering innovation (United Nations, 2015). Research indicates that robust transportation networks can lead to a significant increase in trade volume, stimulate local economies, and enhance employment opportunities (Kumar & Reddy, 2017).
In many African countries, the state of transportation infrastructure plays a crucial role in shaping economic activities and growth. However, the continent faces significant challenges related to transport inefficiency, inadequate infrastructure, and limited access to transport services, particularly in rural areas. A report by the African Development Bank (2018) highlights that approximately 30% of the population in Africa lacks access to reliable transport services, which constrains economic participation and exacerbates poverty. Furthermore, transport costs in Africa are among the highest globally, often reaching up to 50% of the total cost of goods traded (World Bank, 2019). Consequently, improving transportation systems is essential for fostering economic integration, market access, and overall development in the region.
Cameroon, with its strategic location at the crossroads of West and Central Africa, is endowed with diverse transport systems, including roads, railways, air, and water transport. Despite these advantages, the Cameroonian transport sector is plagued with challenges related to inadequate infrastructure, poor maintenance, and inefficient service delivery (World Bank, 2020). According to the National Institute of Statistics (2017), less than 20% of the national road network is paved, which significantly hampers accessibility, particularly for small businesses and informal traders.Additionally, the World Bank (2021) reports that urban transport in Cameroon is characterized by a heavy reliance on informal transport services, which often lack regulation and safety standards. This scenario underscores the need for comprehensive policy frameworks that integrate both public and private transport systems to optimize economic activities across various sectors.
Bamenda, the capital of Northwest Region of Cameroon, serves as a pivotal economic hub in the region. The Bamenda II and III subdivisions are experiencing rapid urbanization, which places increasing pressure on existing transport systems. Research conducted by Ngwa et al. (2020) indicates that inadequate public and private transport options hinder trade activities, restrict access to employment opportunities, and limit the mobility of residents in these subdivisions.
In Bamenda, public transport systems primarily consist of minibuses and taxis, while private transport options include motorcycles and private vehicles. Despite their importance, these systems often face challenges such as overcrowding, unreliable schedules, and safety concerns (Ahamat & Tchiangue, 2020). The interplay between these two transport modes is crucial for understanding their collective impact on economic activities in the region.
1.1 Statement of the problem
Despite the critical role of transportation in facilitating economic activities, the transport systems in Bamenda II and III Subdivisions face significant challenges that hinder their effectiveness. The existing public transport options are often inadequate, leading to limited accessibility for residents and businesses. Additionally, the private transport sector is characterized by congestion and a lack of reliable services, which can impede the movement of goods and people. These transport-related challenges contribute to increased operational costs for businesses, limited access to employment opportunities, and reduced economic productivity in the area. As urbanization continues to reshape the demographics and economic landscape of Bamenda, understanding the specific impacts of public and private transport systems on local economic activities becomes essential. Moreover, there is a lack of comprehensive studies that evaluate the relationship between transport systems and economic activities in the Bamenda region. This gap in knowledge restricts the ability of policymakers and urban planners to develop targeted interventions that could enhance transport infrastructure and services, ultimately fostering economic growth and development.
1.2 Research Question
1.2.1Main Research Question
- What are the impacts of public and private transport systems on economic activities in Bamenda II and III subdivisions?
1.2.1Specific Research Questions
- How does the availability and reliability of public transport influence local businesses and trade in Bamenda II and III?
- What role does private transportation play in enhancing access to employment opportunities for residents in these subdivisions?
- How do transportation challenges (e.g., congestion, poor infrastructure) affect the overall economic growth and development in Bamenda II and III?
1.3 Research Objectives
1.3.1Main Research Objective
- To evaluate THE IMPACTS OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE TRANSPORT SYSTEMS ON ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES IN BAMENDA II AND III SUBDIVISIONS.
1.3.2 Specific Research Objectives
- To analyze the influence of the availability and reliability of public transport on local businesses and trade in Bamenda II and III.
- To assess the role of private transportation in improving access to employment opportunities for residents in these subdivisions.
- To identify the challenges posed by transportation systems (e.g., congestion and infrastructure quality) and their effects on economic growth and development in Bamenda II and III.
