Abstract

This study examines the influence of curriculum quality on graduate employability within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Buea, Cameroon. As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, there is growing concern regarding the alignment between academic programs and labor market demands. In particular, graduates from arts faculties often face higher levels of unemployment and underemployment, raising questions about the effectiveness of their educational training in meeting the skills required by employers. This research explores how the quality of the curriculum—defined by its relevance, adaptability, and practical focus—impacts the employability of graduates.

The study adopts a mixed-method research design, combining quantitative data collected from alumni employment records and surveys, with qualitative interviews from graduates, employers, and academic staff within the Faculty of Arts. The research investigates key factors related to curriculum quality, such as course content relevance, skill development, internship opportunities, and the integration of practical experience into academic programs. It also assesses whether the curriculum addresses the evolving needs of industries related to the arts, media, communication, and cultural sectors in Cameroon and beyond.

Findings from the study suggest a significant correlation between curriculum quality and graduate employability. Graduates from programs that integrate practical skills, internships, and industry-relevant courses exhibit higher employability rates than those from programs that are more theory-driven. Furthermore, the study highlights gaps between academic training and the expectations of employers, particularly regarding soft skills, digital literacy, and entrepreneurial competencies, which are increasingly essential in today’s job market. Feedback from employers indicates that while some graduates possess the necessary technical knowledge, they often lack practical experience and job-ready skills.

In conclusion, the research underscores the need for continuous curriculum review and reform within the Faculty of Arts at the University of Buea to enhance graduate employability. The study recommends a stronger collaboration between the university and industry stakeholders to ensure that academic programs are aligned with market needs. Integrating practical training, internships, and entrepreneurship courses within the curriculum is crucial to preparing graduates for the realities of the labor market.
