Abstract
This study examines the influence of organizational culture on change management within the energy sector in Cameroon, using the case of SONARA (Société Nationale de Raffinage). Organizational culture, which includes the shared values, beliefs, and practices of an organization, plays a key role in determining how well changes are managed and implemented. In the dynamic energy sector, the ability to effectively manage change is crucial for maintaining operational efficiency, adapting to technological advancements, and staying competitive in the market.
The research employs a case study approach, collecting data through employee surveys, interviews with management, and analysis of SONARA’s recent change initiatives. It explores how elements of SONARA’s organizational culture, such as leadership style, communication patterns, employee involvement, and attitudes towards innovation, influence the success of change management efforts. Specifically, the study assesses how SONARA’s culture supports or hinders its ability to implement changes in technology, operational processes, and organizational structures.
Findings reveal that a collaborative and innovation-driven culture at SONARA positively influences its change management efforts. Employees who are involved in decision-making processes and feel valued are more open to change, resulting in smoother transitions and higher productivity. Conversely, hierarchical or rigid cultural elements tend to slow down the change process and create resistance among staff. The study also highlights that clear communication and leadership commitment are essential for aligning organizational culture with change management goals.
In conclusion, organizational culture has a significant impact on the effectiveness of change management in SONARA. A culture that encourages employee participation, embraces innovation, and promotes clear communication is crucial for the successful implementation of changes. Recommendations include fostering a more inclusive culture, improving communication strategies, and ensuring that leadership is aligned with the organization’s change management objectives. These strategies will enable SONARA to adapt more effectively to the evolving demands of the energy sector.
