ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of social media marketing activities on consumer brand preference among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Cameroon. With the rise of digital platforms, social media marketing has become a critical tool for shaping consumer perceptions and preferences. This research explores how various social media marketing strategies impact brand preference among consumers and assesses the effectiveness of these strategies employed by SMEs in Cameroon.
The research employs a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative data from surveys of 200 consumers and qualitative insights from interviews with 20 marketing managers and business owners from SMEs across Cameroon. It examines several aspects of social media marketing, such as content quality, engagement practices, advertising, and the role of different social media platforms in influencing consumer attitudes toward brands.
Findings reveal that social media marketing significantly affects consumer brand preference for SMEs in Cameroon. High-quality, engaging, and relevant content is identified as a crucial factor in attracting and retaining consumer attention. Posts that offer value, such as useful information, entertainment, or exclusive offers, are effective in enhancing brand preference and fostering positive consumer perceptions. Active engagement with consumers, including responding to inquiries, participating in discussions, and encouraging user-generated content, is also vital in building brand loyalty. Consumers value brands that interact personally and authentically on social media.
Social media advertising, including targeted ads and sponsored posts, proves effective in reaching specific consumer segments and driving brand preference. Promotions, discounts, and exclusive deals advertised through social media can attract new customers and increase brand loyalty among existing ones. Different social media platforms impact brand preference differently, with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter being particularly influential. The unique features and audience demographics of each platform affect the success of social media marketing strategies. Collaborations with social media influencers and brand ambassadors also play a significant role in enhancing brand visibility and credibility. Influencers who align with the brand’s values and target audience positively contribute to consumer brand preference.
However, challenges such as limited resources for managing social media marketing and difficulties in measuring the direct impact of these activities on brand preference are noted. SMEs can address these challenges by adopting cost-effective tools for social media management, utilizing data analytics to track performance, and focusing on building strong, authentic connections with their audience.
In conclusion, the study highlights the substantial influence of social media marketing on consumer brand preference among SMEs in Cameroon. Effective strategies in content creation, engagement, advertising, and platform utilization are key to enhancing brand preference and achieving marketing success. The research recommends that SMEs continue to leverage social media as a strategic tool for building brand awareness, fostering customer loyalty, and driving business growth.
