Abstract
This study investigates the influence of teachers’ professionalism on the academic performance of secondary school students in Buea, Cameroon. Teachers’ professionalism, encompassing their qualifications, teaching practices, attitudes, and commitment to their profession, plays a crucial role in shaping educational outcomes. This research aims to explore how various aspects of teachers’ professionalism affect students’ academic performance and to identify the key factors that contribute to effective teaching and learning in secondary schools in Buea.
In the context of Cameroon, where educational quality is critical for national development, understanding the impact of teachers’ professionalism on student achievement is essential for improving educational standards. This study examines how professional attributes such as teachers’ qualifications, pedagogical skills, classroom management, and dedication to their roles influence students’ academic outcomes. The research also considers how teachers’ engagement with continuous professional development and their relationships with students impact academic performance.
The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data is collected from secondary school teachers, students, and school administrators in Buea. The quantitative component involves a survey of teachers and students to assess perceptions of teachers’ professionalism and academic performance, while the qualitative component includes interviews with key stakeholders to gain deeper insights into the relationship between professionalism and student achievement.
Preliminary findings indicate that teachers’ professionalism significantly affects students’ academic performance. Key aspects such as teachers’ qualifications, teaching methods, and classroom management skills are positively correlated with higher student achievement. Teachers who demonstrate a high level of professionalism, including ongoing professional development and a commitment to best practices, tend to foster better learning environments and improve student outcomes.
The study also finds that teachers’ attitudes towards their profession, including their motivation, enthusiasm, and relationship with students, play a crucial role in enhancing students’ academic performance. Positive teacher-student interactions, characterized by respect and support, contribute to a more engaging and effective learning experience, leading to improved academic results.
However, the research identifies several challenges that impact the effectiveness of teachers’ professionalism in Buea. These challenges include limited access to professional development opportunities, inadequate teaching resources, and large class sizes, which can constrain teachers’ ability to implement best practices effectively. Additionally, the study highlights the need for improved support systems for teachers, including better infrastructure, access to training, and enhanced administrative support.
The study concludes that fostering teachers’ professionalism is crucial for enhancing academic performance among secondary school students in Buea. Recommendations include investing in teachers’ professional development, providing adequate teaching resources, and creating supportive school environments that enable teachers to perform at their best. By addressing these factors, the education system in Buea can improve student outcomes and contribute to the overall quality of education in Cameroon.
