ABSTRACT
The investigation of endangered species found in the locality of sisia 4 village nkwen bamenda was carried out from April to may 2024. This was to identify and document knowledge on : the types of endangered species found in the locality, how concerned are we about the endangered wild animal species . How do we conserve such species . Questionnaires, pen paper were used to collect data . Questionnaires were administered 100 informant between 18 years and above . Information was collected about the various endangered species . The most common endangered species we gathered data on was the elephant (52.5%) followed by the leopard (27.5)% the least of this species were the honey bees , sea turtle , tigers with (10.5)% . The main threat to this species causing thier extinction was over hunting and poaching(57.9%) , and human activities( farming , construction)the least was climate change (6%) . From our investigation we proposed that the general public should be educated on the importance and dangers of endangered species and should be included in syllabus in secondary schools . Informant also reported some species which are soon going to extinct ( pangolin ). Endangered species still remain a key factor in the food chain and food web and of there is an extinction of any they will be a disruption in the food chain . Conservation and protection of this species should be a top priority in our locality, over hunting should be restricted . The biodiversity of Cameroon needs protection from foreign entities .
key word: extinction, conservation , endangered species , biodiversity.
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Our planet now faces a global extinction crisis never witnessed by mankind; scientist predicted that more than 1 million species are on the track for extinction in the coming decades. Each time a species goes extinct the world around us unravels a bit and the consequences profound not just for those species but for all of us. There are tangible consequential losses such as crop pollination, water purification but also spiritual and cultural loss. Although often insured by the noise and rush of modern life people retain and develop emotional connection to wild life. Wildlife and plants have inspired our histories mythologies, language and how we view the world. The presence of wildlife brings joy enriches us all and each extinction makes our home lonely and colder places for the future generation. The current extinction rises is entirely of our own making more than a centaur of habitat destruction, pollution, the spread of invasive species over harvest from the wild, climate change, population growth and other activities have pushed nature to the brink. Most of the species that face extinction are endangered species because of their fewer quantity. Due to rapid disappearance of some of this plant and animals species
Problem Statement
An endangered species is a type of organism that is threatened by extinction. Species become endangered for two main reasons: loss of habitat and genetic variation. A loss of habitat can occur naturally or by human pressure. Some of the biggest threat of wild life include illegal trade, invasive species, pollution and climate change. In the |Mezam division animals are hunted indiscriminately which leads to reduction in species and a threat to the once around. Many people are ignorant on the effect the absences of animals and plants cause to their habitat. the absence of some plants and animals’ species will cause a great impact to the surrounding environment. Animals play a part in their habitat and if they become extinct that could affect other animals and plants that live in that area.
Objectives
Main Objective
The main objectives of this work is to;
know how these endangered species, affect the biodiversity.
Specific Objectives
- To make species population healthy and vital so they can be delisted from the endangered species act
- Distinguish between extinct and enlargement
- Analyze reasons for classifying species as endangered and or extinct
- Conduct research and report on the threatened endangered or extinct species.
Research Hypothesis
HP1: They are endangered species found in the Cameroon biodiversity.
HP2: They are no endangered species found in the biodiversity of Cameroon.
Research Questions
- What type of endangered species are found in the area of study?
- How do they affect the area?
- Are they important to the area?
- What are their effects on biodiversity?
