Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are infectious worms that are acquired through contact with eggs or immature larval stages of the parasites, hence the term “Soil transmitted” [1]. They are the most common in the group of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). NTDs are a group of tropical diseases that are mostly endemic in poor populations of developing countries [2]. STH infections are caused by roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides), pinworms (Enterobius vermicularis), whipworms (Trichuris trichiura), hookworms (Necator americanus and Ancylostoma duodenale) and the threadworm (Strongyloides stercoralis) [2, 3]. They are transmitted by contact with contaminated soil with infected human excreta. Groups at risk for STH are those in particular need of micronutrients: pre-SAC, SAC and women of reproductive age. STH adversely affect nutritional status and impairs cognitive development in children [4].
Diseases have been an increased cause of burden in the world, especially in children, as they are the most fragile and vulnerable to the infections.
Soil transmitted helminth infections are parasitic diseases that pose as the most burdensome especially in children of school age and pre-school age. This is because they show little to no signs and symptoms and have longer incubation periods while in the body system, which can be life threatening, especially to children.
A research in this sector will not only provide information on the occurrence of soil transmitted helminths in children under 15 years in the Nkwen Health District, but it will also aid in sensitizing the population on maintaining proper hygienic rules and regulations that could help.
