ABSTRACT

This study explores the perception of students about school bullying and how it affects their academic performance in secondary schools in Cameroon. School bullying is a significant issue that negatively impacts students’ mental health, self-esteem, and academic achievements. The research aims to assess students’ views on bullying, its prevalence, and its effects on their academic performance.

A mixed-method approach was utilized, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Surveys were distributed to secondary school students to gather data on their experiences and perceptions of bullying. The survey also explored the relationship between bullying incidents and students’ academic performance. Qualitative interviews with selected students, teachers, and school counselors provided deeper insights into how bullying affects students’ concentration, attendance, and emotional well-being. The study also reviewed existing literature on the impact of school bullying on academic outcomes to frame the research findings.

The results indicate that school bullying has a detrimental effect on students’ academic performance in Cameroon. Students who reported frequent bullying incidents often had lower grades, poor attendance, and reduced engagement in school activities. The psychological impact of bullying, including anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, was found to be a major factor contributing to their declining academic performance. Teachers and counselors highlighted the need for stronger anti-bullying policies and support systems within schools to address these issues effectively.

The study concludes that addressing school bullying is essential for improving students’ academic performance. Recommendations include implementing comprehensive anti-bullying programs, increasing awareness about the effects of bullying, and providing counseling services for affected students. By taking these steps, schools in Cameroon can create a safer and more supportive learning environment, leading to better academic outcomes.
