Abstract
The role of external auditors in enhancing the integrity and financial performance of banks has become increasingly critical, particularly in emerging markets like Buea, Cameroon. In the banking sector, fraud remains a significant concern that undermines stakeholder confidence, disrupts operations, and affects overall financial performance. External auditors play a pivotal role in detecting fraudulent activities and ensuring the reliability of financial statements, thereby contributing to the performance and stability of banks.
This study seeks to examine the role of external auditors in fraud detection and how their activities influence the financial performance of banks in Buea, Cameroon. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data is gathered from the financial statements and audit reports of selected banks, while qualitative data is obtained through interviews with external auditors, bank managers, and regulatory officials. The analysis focuses on understanding the extent to which external auditors contribute to detecting and preventing fraud, and how their findings influence banking performance.
Key areas explored in this research include the external audit process, the tools and techniques used by auditors to detect fraud, and the challenges faced by external auditors in performing their duties effectively. The study also examines the relationship between external audit practices and key performance indicators of banks, such as profitability, operational efficiency, and customer trust.
The findings of the study reveal that external auditors are instrumental in identifying fraudulent activities within banks, particularly in areas such as financial statement manipulation, misappropriation of assets, and non-compliance with regulatory requirements. Their independent assessments provide an additional layer of scrutiny that complements internal audit functions and strengthens the overall governance framework of banks. The presence of external auditors not only enhances fraud detection but also promotes transparency, accountability, and adherence to best practices, which collectively contribute to improved financial performance.
However, the study also highlights several challenges that hinder the effectiveness of external auditors in Buea. These challenges include limited access to certain bank records, resistance from bank management, and a lack of advanced auditing tools. Additionally, the regulatory environment in Cameroon presents some complexities that external auditors must navigate, which may affect the scope and depth of their investigations.
Despite these challenges, the research shows that banks that engage reputable external auditors tend to experience better financial performance due to improved risk management, enhanced internal controls, and a reduction in fraudulent activities. The study also emphasizes the importance of continuous professional development for external auditors, as well as the need for collaboration between auditors, bank management, and regulators to ensure a comprehensive approach to fraud detection.
The study concludes by recommending that banks in Buea prioritize the role of external auditors as part of their overall risk management strategy. Banks should ensure that external auditors are provided with the necessary resources and access to conduct thorough audits. Additionally, external auditors should be encouraged to adopt advanced auditing techniques, including forensic accounting, to enhance their fraud detection capabilities.
For policymakers, the study suggests that the regulatory framework governing external auditing in Cameroon should be strengthened to support more rigorous and transparent audit processes. This includes enhancing the oversight of external auditors, ensuring that they adhere to international auditing standards, and promoting a culture of accountability in the banking sector.
Overall, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of external auditors in fraud detection and performance improvement in the banking sector of Buea, Cameroon. It provides valuable insights for bank managers, auditors, and regulators who are committed to enhancing the financial integrity and stability of the banking industry.
