ABSTRACT

Financial innovation has emerged as a crucial driver for enhancing financial inclusion, particularly in microfinance institutions (MFIs) across developing countries like Cameroon. This study examines the role of financial innovation in improving the financial inclusion of MFIs in Cameroon. It aims to understand how advancements such as mobile banking, digital platforms, and innovative financial products have impacted the accessibility of financial services for underserved populations, particularly in rural and low-income areas. Financial inclusion, defined as the ability of individuals and businesses to access useful and affordable financial products and services, is critical for economic development and poverty reduction. In Cameroon, MFIs play a vital role in providing financial services to those excluded from traditional banking systems, and financial innovations have the potential to significantly enhance their reach and effectiveness.

This study adopts a qualitative approach, using primary data collected through interviews with MFI managers, customers, and financial technology experts, along with secondary data from reports and academic literature. It explores key financial innovations such as mobile money, digital lending, savings platforms, and alternative credit-scoring mechanisms that have been integrated into MFI operations in Cameroon. The study further evaluates how these innovations have addressed the challenges faced by MFIs, including high transaction costs, lack of physical infrastructure, and inadequate financial literacy among customers.

The findings reveal that mobile money services have significantly increased access to financial services, especially in rural areas where traditional banking services are either unavailable or insufficient. Through mobile phones, individuals can now deposit, withdraw, and transfer money without the need for a physical bank branch. This has reduced transaction costs and made financial services more accessible. Additionally, digital platforms have enabled MFIs to offer a wider range of financial products such as micro-loans, savings accounts, and insurance products, all of which can be managed online or through mobile applications. The introduction of digital credit-scoring systems, which analyze alternative data such as mobile usage and payment history, has also expanded the ability of MFIs to provide loans to individuals without a formal credit history, thus increasing their client base.

However, the study also identifies several challenges to the full integration of financial innovation within MFIs in Cameroon. These include inadequate infrastructure, particularly in remote areas where internet and mobile network coverage is poor, as well as low levels of digital literacy among potential users. Moreover, regulatory hurdles and a lack of clear guidelines for digital financial services have sometimes slowed the pace of innovation within the microfinance sector. Security concerns related to digital transactions also present a barrier to widespread adoption.

In conclusion, financial innovation plays a transformative role in improving the financial inclusion of MFIs in Cameroon. While innovations such as mobile money and digital lending have greatly expanded access to financial services, further investments in infrastructure, digital literacy, and regulatory frameworks are necessary to fully realize the potential of these innovations. By addressing these challenges, MFIs in Cameroon can continue to extend their reach and contribute to broader economic development and poverty alleviation.
