INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the study
According to the United Nations (2015), poverty alleviation refers to the process of reducing or eliminating poverty and its effects on individuals, households, and communities. It involves a multifaceted approach that addresses the root causes of poverty, such as lack of access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Poverty alleviation aims to improve the living standards and well-being of the poor and vulnerable populations, enabling them to meet their basic needs, participate in economic activities, and enjoy a dignified life. Effective poverty alleviation strategies often involve a combination of short-term assistance, such as food aid and emergency relief, and long-term development initiatives, such as education and job training, microfinance, and community development programs.
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) play a crucial role in providing access to education and skills training for the poor and vulnerable populations. By offering educational programs, vocational training, and literacy initiatives, NGOs equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary to access better-paying jobs and improve their livelihoods (Khan, 2017). For instance, the non-profit organization, BRAC, has implemented education programs in Bangladesh, reaching over 12 million children and helping to reduce poverty and improve health outcomes (BRAC, 2020). By investing in education and skills training, NGOs can help break the cycle of poverty and empower individuals to improve their economic prospects.
NGOs play a vital role in implementing healthcare and nutrition programs that target the poor and vulnerable populations. These programs aim to improve health outcomes, reduce mortality rates, and enhance the overall well-being of individuals and communities (WHO, 2019). For instance, the non-profit organization, Doctors Without Borders, provides medical humanitarian aid to populations affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters (MSF, 2020). NGOs also implement nutrition programs, such as food supplementation and nutrition education, to address malnutrition and related health problems. By investing in healthcare and nutrition programs, NGOs can help reduce poverty and improve health outcomes.
NGOs provide critical support to communities affected by natural disasters, conflicts, or other crises. Disaster relief and rehabilitation programs implemented by NGOs aim to provide emergency assistance, shelter, and rehabilitation support to affected populations (IFRC, 2020). For example, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) provides emergency relief and rehabilitation support to communities affected by disasters, helping them to recover and rebuild their lives. NGOs also work to promote disaster risk reduction and management, helping communities to prepare for and respond to disasters.
NGOs play a crucial role in advocating for policy changes and reforms that benefit the poor and vulnerable populations. By influencing policy and decision-making processes, NGOs can help to promote inclusive and equitable development policies (OECD, 2019). For instance, the non-profit organization, Oxfam, advocates for policy changes to address poverty and inequality, working with governments, international organizations, and local communities to promote sustainable development and human rights. By advocating for policy changes, NGOs can help to address the root causes of poverty and promote more equitable and sustainable development outcomes.
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) play a vital role in poverty alleviation, and their objectives are multifaceted. One of the primary objectives of NGOs is to improve access to education and skills training for the poor. By providing education and skills training, NGOs enable individuals to acquire skills and knowledge necessary to access better-paying jobs and improve their livelihoods (Khan, 2017). For instance, the non-profit organization, BRAC, has implemented education programs in Bangladesh, reaching over 12 million children and helping to reduce poverty and improve health outcomes (BRAC, 2020).
NGOs also aim to improve health and nutrition among the poor. By providing healthcare services, nutrition programs, and health education, NGOs can help reduce mortality rates, improve health outcomes, and enhance the overall well-being of individuals and communities (WHO, 2019). For instance, the non-profit organization, Doctors Without Borders, provides medical humanitarian aid to populations affected by conflict, epidemics, and natural disasters (MSF, 2020).
In addition to these objectives, NGOs also provide disaster relief and rehabilitation support to communities affected by natural disasters, conflicts, or other crises (IFRC, 2020). NGOs advocate for policy changes and reforms that benefit the poor and vulnerable populations, promoting inclusive and equitable development policies (OECD, 2019). Furthermore, NGOs promote community development by empowering local communities to take ownership of their development, promoting self-reliance, and building community capacity (UNDP, 2020).
Finally, NGOs aim to improve access to basic services such as water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), promoting human dignity and well-being (UNICEF, 2020). By achieving these objectives, NGOs can help reduce poverty, improve health outcomes, and promote sustainable development.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Bamenda III,a municipality within the Northwest Region of Cameroon, faces significant challenges related to poverty, exacerbated by ongoing sociopolitical instability, internal displacement, and limited access to essential services. While Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are active in Bamenda III aiming to address these challenges through various interventions, the actual impact and effectiveness of their efforts on poverty alleviation remain unclear and require critical investigation. Despite the efforts of NGOs, to alleviate poverty in Bamenda III, poverty remains a persistent challenge in the area. The effectiveness of NGO-led poverty alleviation programs in Bamenda III is unclear, and there is a lack of empirical evidence on the impact of these programs on the livelihoods of the poor. Furthermore, the poverty alleviation strategies employed by NGOs in Bamenda III may not be tailored to the specific needs of the local population, which may limit their effectiveness.Additionally, NGOs operating in Bamenda III face significant challenges in implementing their programs due to the volatile security situation in the region. The ongoing Anglophone crisis has created an environment of uncertainty and risk, making it difficult for NGOs to maintain consistent operations, reach vulnerable populations, and ensure the safety of their staff. This security challenge further complicates the assessment of NGO effectiveness and may hinder their ability to deliver sustainable poverty alleviation interventions. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by investigating the impact of NGOs poverty alleviation efforts in Bamenda III.
