ABSTRACT

This study explores the role of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) in the administration of secondary schools and its influence on students’ academic achievement, focusing on selected schools in Buea, Cameroon. The PTA, as a bridge between the parents and school authorities, has a critical role in improving school management and fostering academic success. The research examines how the PTA contributes to decision-making, resource mobilization, school governance, and the creation of a conducive learning environment that impacts students’ academic outcomes.

Using a mixed-methods approach, the study combines both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Surveys were administered to teachers, parents, and students to gather their perspectives on the PTA’s role in school administration and its effects on academic performance. In-depth interviews were conducted with school administrators and PTA members to understand the association’s specific contributions to school management, including infrastructure development, provision of learning materials, and disciplinary support. The study also examined academic records and PTA meeting minutes to correlate PTA activities with student academic achievements over time.

The findings indicate that the PTA significantly influences the administration of schools by supporting infrastructural development, providing financial aid for teaching materials, and contributing to the maintenance of school facilities. These contributions help create an environment conducive to learning, thus promoting better academic performance among students. Moreover, the PTA’s involvement in decision-making processes, especially regarding school rules and disciplinary measures, fosters a sense of accountability and improves student behavior, indirectly enhancing academic outcomes. However, the study also highlights challenges such as insufficient participation of some parents, financial mismanagement, and occasional conflicts between the PTA and school administration, which can hamper its effectiveness.

The study concludes that the PTA plays a vital role in both the administration of secondary schools and the academic success of students in Buea. However, for the PTA to have a more substantial impact, it is necessary to encourage greater parental involvement, ensure financial transparency, and strengthen collaboration between the PTA and school authorities. The study recommends regular capacity-building workshops for PTA members on financial management and effective school governance. Additionally, school administrations should create more opportunities for parents to participate in the PTA, promoting a more inclusive and balanced representation of the school community. This would not only enhance the effectiveness of the PTA but also contribute to improved academic achievement for students.
