Abstract

Constructive discipline is a fundamental component in shaping student behavior and promoting a conducive learning environment in secondary schools. The role of school management is critical in ensuring that disciplinary measures are not only implemented effectively but also contribute to the holistic development of students. This study examines the role of school management in ensuring constructive discipline in secondary schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. It focuses on the strategies employed by school authorities, the challenges they encounter, and the outcomes of their efforts in maintaining discipline that is both corrective and developmental.

This research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection. Qualitative data were gathered through interviews and focus group discussions with school administrators, teachers, students, and parents. These conversations explored the policies and strategies developed by school management to enforce discipline, as well as the perceptions of various stakeholders regarding the effectiveness of these measures. The study also investigates how school management engages with parents and the broader community to support constructive discipline.

Quantitative data were collected through surveys distributed to a broader sample of teachers, students, and parents in secondary schools across Buea Municipality. The surveys focused on assessing the perceived effectiveness of school management in enforcing discipline, the types of disciplinary measures commonly applied, and the overall impact on student behavior, academic performance, and school climate. Disciplinary records and student performance data were analyzed to identify patterns and measure the success of the various approaches to discipline.

The findings reveal that school management plays a pivotal role in ensuring constructive discipline in secondary schools. Effective school management fosters a culture of respect, accountability, and support, where disciplinary actions are seen as opportunities for growth rather than mere punishment. Schools that have strong leadership, clear policies, and consistent enforcement of rules are more successful in maintaining discipline and promoting positive behavior among students. Furthermore, the involvement of parents and the community in disciplinary processes contributes to the effectiveness of these efforts.

However, the study also identifies challenges faced by school management, including limited resources, inadequate training in modern disciplinary techniques, and resistance from students and parents to certain measures. These challenges hinder the full potential of constructive discipline and highlight the need for more comprehensive and inclusive approaches to discipline that address the root causes of student indiscipline.

In conclusion, the role of school management is crucial in ensuring constructive discipline in secondary schools in Buea Municipality. By fostering a positive school climate, engaging with the community, and implementing well-structured policies, school management can significantly influence student behavior and contribute to the overall success of the educational system. Future research should focus on developing best practices for school management in different contexts across Cameroon, particularly in areas with diverse socio-economic challenges.
