INTRODUCTION
A students’ union is a student organization present in many colleges, Universities, and high schools. In higher Education, the students’ union is often accorded its own building on the campus, dedicated to social, organizational activities, representation, and academic support of the membership. Depending on the country, the purpose, assembly, methods, and implementation of the group may vary, universally, the purposed of students union or student government is to represent fellow students.
The commonwealth secretariat ,via its youth programme center for the groundwork for the formation of a commonwealth (SUD) student Union Department in all universities in the 54 nations that make up the common wealth .At the kernel of consultation meeting that took place in UB bringing together students delegates from ten common wealth member countries .some of the recommendations of the student union association in universities were aimed at a strategy towards empowerment of the students, give the students a voice in varsity administration, influence university and related policies ,work in synergy with other students Unions in another universities in Cameroon to adopt a spirit of consensus, promote progress and globalization, international research ,avoid violence and disorder caused by youths. UB vice chancellor Prof Vicent Titanji said while common wealth student delegates pursue the objectives, of democracy, tolerance, fairness, development and peace, his university has some good experiences in student Unionism, which are worth emulating by other universities in the commonwealth countries. There are many state universities and private universities across the country in different regions. Most has a student Union association .The university of Bamenda being among the most prestigious university in Cameroon.
Decision no /UB`a/VC/DVC-ICE/D-SA/SRD/SAC laying down rules and regulations governing the election of students’ association executive in the University of Bamenda. The student union of the University of Bamenda came into existence.
1.2 DEFINITION OF TERMS
1.2.1 Student union
The students ‘union is the students organization in a University or college which organizes leisure activities provides welfare services and represent students political and academic interest .In other terms the students’ union is a building where students’ union organization has its offices and which usually has a shop ,a coffee bar , and a meeting place.
1.2.2 University
A university is an institution of higher education, usually comprising of college of liberal arts and sciences and graduates and professional schools and having the authorities to confer degrees in various fields of studies. For example; the field of law political science, the field of mass communication and urban development, the field of education, the field of banking and finance, the field of health science, the field of petrol engineering.
A university is being classified as follows; the minister of higher education, who is controlled by the vice chancellor, pro chancellor, the registrar and the list continues.
1.2.3 Administration
It is the execution of public affairs as distinguished from policy making.
1.3 JUSTIFICATION
The Role of student union in the administration of a university has been categorized as one of the main issue in the Educational sector in Cameroon. The researcher has taken into consideration the role of the SU to the administration and to the student. The impact of this role in the university has been analysis.
