Abstract

This study explores the role of women in conflict resolution in Cameroon, focusing on their contributions and impact in mitigating and resolving conflicts within various contexts. Women have historically been pivotal in peacebuilding and conflict management, yet their roles are often underrecognized. In Cameroon, a country with diverse ethnic groups and a history of both inter-ethnic and political conflicts, women’s involvement in conflict resolution is crucial yet frequently marginalized.

The research employs qualitative methods, including interviews and focus groups with women leaders, community activists, and conflict resolution practitioners across Cameroon. It examines women’s roles in local, regional, and national conflict resolution efforts, assessing their involvement in peacebuilding processes, mediation, and reconciliation activities. The study also considers how cultural, social, and political factors influence women’s participation in these roles.

Findings indicate that women in Cameroon play significant roles in peacebuilding and conflict resolution. They are often involved in grassroots efforts, using their positions within families and communities to foster dialogue and mediate disputes. Women’s organizations and networks contribute to peace initiatives by advocating for non-violent solutions and providing support to victims of conflict. In areas affected by the Anglophone crisis and other regional conflicts, women have been instrumental in peace negotiations and reconciliation processes.

However, the study also reveals several challenges that women face in conflict resolution roles. These include limited access to decision-making platforms, societal biases, and lack of recognition for their contributions. Despite their active involvement, women are frequently excluded from formal peace processes and high-level negotiations. Furthermore, traditional gender norms and stereotypes often undermine their authority and impact in conflict resolution efforts.

The research concludes that enhancing the role of women in conflict resolution in Cameroon requires addressing these challenges. Efforts should focus on increasing women’s representation in formal peace processes, recognizing and supporting their contributions, and challenging cultural and societal barriers that limit their involvement. Strengthening women’s networks and providing them with the necessary resources and training can also amplify their impact in conflict resolution.
