Abstract

The utilization of oral contraceptives plays a crucial role in family planning and reproductive health, offering individuals in the Molyko community of Buea greater control over their fertility. This study investigates the knowledge, attitudes, and practices surrounding the use of oral contraceptives amongst women of reproductive age in the Molyko community. It aims to identify factors influencing contraceptive use, including socio-economic, educational, and cultural determinants, and to assess the prevalence and patterns of usage.

A descriptive cross-sectional survey design was employed, with data collected from a representative sample of women aged 18-49 through structured questionnaires and interviews. The study examines the extent of knowledge about oral contraceptives, sources of information, perceptions regarding side effects, and the influence of healthcare providers on contraceptive choices. Additionally, it investigates barriers to access and adherence, such as financial constraints, misconceptions, and religious or cultural beliefs.

Preliminary results indicate that while awareness of oral contraceptives is relatively high, misconceptions about potential health risks and side effects limit consistent usage. Many respondents receive information from informal sources, leading to gaps in accurate knowledge. Healthcare providers were found to have a significant impact on the decision to use oral contraceptives, with regular counseling associated with higher adherence rates.

The study emphasizes the importance of community-based education initiatives to provide accurate information on contraceptive options and address common myths. Increasing access to healthcare services and reinforcing provider-patient communication may also promote informed decision-making, improving contraceptive practices in the Molyko community.
