ABSTRACT

The transnationalization of terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, particularly with the rise of Boko Haram, has emerged as a significant security challenge for the region. This phenomenon transcends national boundaries, affecting Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. Boko Haram, initially localized in northeastern Nigeria, has expanded its operations across borders, exploiting weak state presence, porous borders, and socio-economic vulnerabilities in the Lake Chad Basin. The group’s activities have led to widespread instability, displacement, and humanitarian crises, disrupting regional development and security.

This study provides an appraisal of Boko Haram’s transnational activities, focusing on the factors contributing to its expansion across the Lake Chad Basin. Key drivers include political instability, economic deprivation, and marginalization of populations, which have fueled grievances and created fertile ground for recruitment. Additionally, the geographic characteristics of the region, such as the porous borders and difficult terrain, have enabled Boko Haram to evade military operations and establish cross-border networks.

The research adopts a multi-disciplinary approach, utilizing both primary and secondary sources. It assesses the political, economic, and social contexts of each affected country and examines regional responses to Boko Haram’s threat. Key findings indicate that regional cooperation, particularly through initiatives such as the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), has been essential in combatting the group. However, challenges remain, including the lack of adequate resources, coordination among affected states, and addressing the root causes of radicalization.

Boko Haram’s transnational operations are also linked to broader global terrorist networks, further complicating efforts to contain its influence. The group’s affiliation with the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) has enhanced its capabilities and reach, increasing the scope of violence in the region. This connection highlights the evolving nature of terrorist threats in the Lake Chad Basin, with local insurgencies becoming integrated into global jihadist movements.

The study concludes that addressing the transnational nature of Boko Haram requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond military interventions. Efforts must focus on regional cooperation, socio-economic development, and addressing governance deficits. Long-term solutions should prioritize improving the livelihoods of marginalized communities, investing in education and infrastructure, and strengthening state institutions to reduce the appeal of extremist ideologies.

In conclusion, the transnationalization of terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin exemplifies the complex interplay between local grievances and global jihadist ideologies. The case of Boko Haram underscores the importance of regional and international collaboration in tackling terrorism while addressing the underlying socio-economic conditions that perpetuate violence and instability in the region.
