Abstract
This study explores the use of accounting ratios as a measure of management effectiveness and organizational performance in companies located in Buea, Douala, and Limbe, Cameroon. Accounting ratios, derived from financial statements, provide critical insights into a company’s operational efficiency, liquidity, profitability, and solvency. This research aims to assess how effectively these ratios are utilized by management to monitor performance and make strategic decisions. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of financial data from selected companies with qualitative interviews from key management personnel. Findings indicate that while accounting ratios are widely recognized for their utility, their effective application is often hindered by factors such as lack of financial expertise, inadequate data accuracy, and insufficient integration of accounting systems. The study concludes with recommendations for improving the use of accounting ratios in managerial practices to enhance overall organizational performance.

Background to Study
The use of accounting ratios is a fundamental practice in financial analysis, providing essential metrics that help in evaluating various aspects of a company’s performance. Ratios such as profitability ratios, liquidity ratios, and solvency ratios are instrumental in offering insights into the financial health and operational efficiency of an organization. In the context of Cameroon, particularly in the cities of Buea, Douala, and Limbe, understanding and utilizing these ratios is crucial for management to make informed decisions that drive organizational success (Brigham & Houston, 2019).
The dynamic business environments of Buea, Douala, and Limbe present unique challenges and opportunities for companies operating within these regions. These cities are significant commercial hubs in Cameroon, hosting a diverse range of businesses from various sectors including manufacturing, services, and trade. Effective financial management in such a competitive landscape is imperative, and accounting ratios serve as a valuable tool in this regard (Ross, Westerfield, & Jordan, 2018). They enable managers to benchmark performance against industry standards, identify strengths and weaknesses, and implement strategies for improvement.
Despite the recognized importance of accounting ratios, their application in managerial decision-making in Cameroonian companies often encounters several obstacles. One major challenge is the accuracy and reliability of financial data. Accurate financial statements are the backbone of meaningful ratio analysis, but inconsistencies and errors in accounting records can lead to misleading conclusions (Drury, 2018). Ensuring the precision of financial data through robust internal controls and regular audits is essential for the effective use of accounting ratios.
Another significant factor is the level of financial literacy among management personnel. The ability to interpret and apply accounting ratios requires a sound understanding of financial principles and analytical skills. In many companies, particularly smaller enterprises, there is a gap in financial expertise which hampers the effective use of these ratios (Atrill & McLaney, 2017). Providing training and development opportunities for management can bridge this gap, enabling them to utilize accounting ratios more effectively in their decision-making processes.
Integration of accounting systems with other business operations also plays a critical role in the utility of accounting ratios. Advanced accounting software and integrated financial systems can facilitate real-time data analysis, providing managers with up-to-date information necessary for timely decisions (Romney & Steinbart, 2018). However, many companies in Cameroon still rely on outdated or non-integrated systems, which can limit the accessibility and accuracy of financial data, thus affecting the effectiveness of ratio analysis.
The regulatory environment in Cameroon further impacts the use of accounting ratios in financial analysis. Compliance with the OHADA accounting standards, which aim to harmonize business laws across Africa, ensures consistency and reliability in financial reporting. However, frequent updates and stringent compliance requirements can pose challenges for companies, particularly those with limited resources (OHADA, 2012). Navigating these regulatory requirements effectively is crucial for maintaining the integrity of financial data used in ratio analysis.
The economic landscape of Cameroon, characterized by volatility and varying market conditions, also influences the application of accounting ratios. Companies must adapt to changes in the economic environment, and accounting ratios provide critical insights that help in this adaptation process (Pandey, 2015). For instance, liquidity ratios can indicate a company’s ability to meet short-term obligations during economic downturns, while profitability ratios can help in evaluating performance during periods of growth.
Moreover, the use of accounting ratios is not only limited to internal management but also extends to external stakeholders such as investors, creditors, and regulatory bodies. These ratios provide transparency and facilitate informed decision-making by external parties, which can influence the company’s ability to secure financing and investment (Higgins, 2019). Therefore, the credibility of these ratios is paramount, emphasizing the need for accurate and reliable financial reporting.
In summary, accounting ratios are vital tools for assessing management effectiveness and organizational performance. This study focuses on evaluating the use of these ratios in companies located in Buea, Douala, and Limbe, examining the challenges faced and the strategies employed to overcome these challenges. By enhancing the understanding and application of accounting ratios, companies can improve their decision-making processes, achieve better financial performance, and contribute to the overall economic development of the region.
Statement of Problem
The effective use of accounting ratios as a measure of management and organizational performance in Buea, Douala, and Limbe faces several challenges. Firstly, the accuracy and reliability of financial data are critical for meaningful ratio analysis. However, inconsistencies and errors in accounting records often lead to misleading conclusions, hampering effective decision-making. This issue underscores the need for robust internal controls and regular audits to ensure the precision of financial data (Drury, 2018).
Secondly, the level of financial literacy among management personnel poses a significant challenge. Many managers lack the necessary financial expertise to interpret and apply accounting ratios effectively. This gap in knowledge results in suboptimal decision-making, as managers are unable to fully leverage the insights provided by ratio analysis (Atrill & McLaney, 2017). Addressing this gap through targeted training and development programs is essential to enhance managerial competence.
Thirdly, the integration of accounting systems with other business operations influences the utility of accounting ratios. Companies that rely on outdated or non-integrated systems face limitations in accessing and analyzing financial data in real-time. This lack of integration can impede the timely and accurate application of ratio analysis, affecting overall organizational performance (Romney & Steinbart, 2018). Adopting advanced accounting software and integrated financial systems can mitigate these issues.
Fourthly, the regulatory environment in Cameroon affects the use of accounting ratios. Compliance with OHADA accounting standards ensures consistency and reliability in financial reporting. However, frequent updates and stringent compliance requirements can be challenging for companies, particularly those with limited resources (OHADA, 2012). Navigating these regulatory demands effectively is crucial for maintaining the integrity of financial data used in ratio analysis.
Fifthly, the economic volatility in Cameroon presents additional challenges for the application of accounting ratios. Companies must adapt to changing economic conditions, and accounting ratios provide essential insights for this adaptation. However, the dynamic economic environment can complicate the interpretation and application of these ratios, necessitating a nuanced understanding of the broader economic context (Pandey, 2015).
Lastly, the use of accounting ratios extends beyond internal management to external stakeholders such as investors and creditors. These stakeholders rely on accurate and transparent financial information to make informed decisions. The credibility of accounting ratios is paramount, and any discrepancies or inaccuracies can undermine stakeholder confidence and impact the company’s ability to secure financing and investment (Higgins, 2019). Ensuring the reliability of financial reporting is therefore critical for maintaining stakeholder trust.
In conclusion, the use of accounting ratios as a measure of management and organizational performance in Buea, Douala, and Limbe is hindered by several challenges related to data accuracy, managerial expertise, system integration, regulatory compliance, economic volatility, and stakeholder transparency. Addressing these issues is essential to enhance the effectiveness of ratio analysis and improve overall organizational performance.
