ABSTRACT
The impacts of climate change on the environment in coastal areas are increasingly evident, particularly in the Limbe Down Beach area of the Southwest region of Cameroon. This study conducts a vulnerability assessment to evaluate the effects of climate change on the coastal environment and the communities that depend on it. Coastal areas in Cameroon are vital for their biodiversity, economic activities, and cultural heritage. However, they are also highly susceptible to climate change impacts, including sea level rise, increased flooding, and coastal erosion.
The research begins by examining the physical and ecological characteristics of the Limbe Down Beach area. The region is home to diverse marine life and mangrove ecosystems that play a crucial role in coastal protection and biodiversity. However, the study highlights that these ecosystems are under threat due to climate change and human activities.
Rising sea levels are a significant concern, resulting in the inundation of coastal habitats and increased salinity, which affects freshwater resources. The study also investigates the occurrence of flooding events, which have become more frequent and intense due to changing weather patterns. These flooding incidents not only damage infrastructure but also disrupt local livelihoods, particularly those dependent on fishing and agriculture.
Coastal erosion is another critical issue addressed in this research. The study finds that the Limbe Down Beach area is experiencing accelerated erosion, leading to the loss of land and habitats. This erosion threatens not only the ecological balance but also the economic activities that rely on a stable coastal environment.
In addition to environmental impacts, the study assesses the social vulnerabilities faced by local communities. It examines the adaptive capacities of these communities, highlighting the need for increased awareness and resources to manage climate-related risks effectively.
The findings underscore the urgent need for integrated coastal management strategies that prioritize both environmental conservation and community resilience. Recommendations include strengthening local governance, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and restoring degraded coastal ecosystems to enhance their capacity to withstand climate change impacts.
In conclusion, the vulnerability assessment reveals that the Limbe Down Beach area is highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, necessitating immediate action to protect the environment and support local communities. Through targeted interventions and community involvement, it is possible to build resilience against the ongoing challenges posed by climate change.
