The assumption of the study on cargo handling equipment is a facilitating apparatus that determines level of port performance. It is common knowledge that ports play a key role in economic growth and development. Similarly, European Union (2022) reported that nearly 75% of the trade worldwide is handled in ports. This implies that effective cargo handling leads to positive outcomes to port performance and countries economic growth and development. According to Sislian, Jaegler & Cariou (2021) the process of cargo clearance in its international standards should take three to four days. But this is not the case in African ports especially Nigeria Ports where the processes take 15 days to three weeks. Considering the fact that dwell time and clearance time are major commercial instruments used to attract cargo and revenues, this call for question on the cause of the delay. Alderton (2022) notes that cargo handling is the backbone of a port operation. This is in line with Rigot (2021) who suggests that the port performance indicators that focus on the cargo-handling are very important in evaluating the performance of a port. Based on the opinion of these scholars, it cannot be denied that cargo handling equipment c a n i m p a c t on Port performance. Therefore, more plans and efforts geared towards developing cargo handling equipment at ports should be given a priority. Tongzon (2021) recognized that the decisions to route cargo through a certain port over the other is influenced by certain factors. One of such factor is the availability of cargo handling equipment for efficient cargo operations.
The efficiency of maritime transport is deeply influenced by the functionality and management of warehouses at port terminals. At the Port of Douala in Cameroon, which serves as a critical maritime gateway for Central Africa, the warehouse system plays a pivotal role in determining the overall performance of cargo handling, ship turnaround time, and supply chain fluidity. According to Feng (2021), warehousing serves as a strategic node in port operations, enhancing the coordination of cargo flows and minimizing port congestion. Poorly managed warehouses, as observed at the Port of Douala, often lead to cargo delays and inefficient transport cycles (Esmer, 2022). Enyioko (2021) emphasizes that warehouse delays increase dwell time, impacting the reliability of maritime transport and raising operational costs for shipping companies. Moreover, the lack of advanced warehouse infrastructure and digital inventory systems continues to hinder real-time cargo tracking and efficient port logistics (Duntan, 2020). Denis (2021) reports that modernizing warehousing systems with automation and integrated software solutions can drastically reduce port bottlenecks. In addition, Babbie (2021) stated the significance of aligning warehouse capacity with vessel schedules to avoid overstocking and underutilization of space. Alderton (2021) discusses the critical interdependence between warehouse planning and ship loading/unloading procedures, asserting that the optimization of these facilities boosts port throughput. Akinyemi (2021) also identifies that in many African ports, including Douala, limited investment in warehouse infrastructure weakens the competitiveness of maritime transport. Therefore, improving warehouse facilities and operational strategies at the Port of Douala is essential for enhancing maritime transport efficiency. It requires targeted policy interventions, public-private partnerships, and infrastructure investment to achieve sustainable logistics performance and meet global shipping standards. The integration of smart warehousing technologies can position Douala as a more effective regional maritime hub, supporting economic growth and trade facilitation in the Central African subregion.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
The Port of Douala, Cameroon’s principal seaport, plays a crucial role in the regional maritime logistics chain, serving not only the country but also landlocked neighbors such as Chad and the Central African Republic. However, its operational efficiency has been persistently undermined by warehouse-related challenges. Warehouses at the port are often characterized by inadequate infrastructure, outdated handling equipment, and poor inventory management systems, all of which contribute to delays and inefficiencies in cargo movement. According to Feng (2021), warehouses serve as a vital link between sea transport and inland distribution, and any inefficiency within them affects the overall maritime transport chain. Despite the strategic importance of the port, Esmer (2022) notes that warehouse congestion, limited capacity, and poor coordination continue to lead to increased dwell time for goods, higher shipping costs, and logistical backlogs. Enyioko (2021) adds that these inefficiencies reduce the port’s competitiveness and make it less attractive to international shipping lines. Duntan (2020) further highlights that many warehouse facilities at the port lack digital systems for inventory tracking, leading to mismanagement and delays in cargo retrieval. Denis (2021) observes that insufficient integration between warehousing and shipping operations hampers real-time cargo flow, causing systemic bottlenecks. Additionally, Babbie (2021) emphasizes the need for alignment between warehouse scheduling and vessel arrival patterns to avoid unnecessary congestion. Alderton (2021) supports this by stressing that warehouse efficiency is a critical determinant of port throughput. Despite these known issues, little has been done to address them holistically. Akinyemi (2021) argues that without targeted reforms and investment in smart warehouse technologies, the Port of Douala will continue to face efficiency challenges. Therefore, there is a pressing need to examine the influence of warehousing systems on the performance of maritime transport at the port, to identify sustainable solutions that can enhance operational efficiency.
1.3 Research Questions:
- How does the current state of warehouse infrastructure at the Port of Douala affect the efficiency of maritime transport operations?
- What are the key warehouse management practices influencing cargo handling time and vessel turnaround at the Port of Douala?
- To what extent does warehouse capacity and utilization contribute to port congestion and delays in maritime logistics at the Port of Douala?
- What technological and policy interventions can improve warehouse efficiency to enhance maritime transport performance at the Port of Douala?Top of Form

1.4 Objectives of the Study
The primary aim of this study is to examine the warehouse influence and efficiency of maritime transport at the port of Douala Cameroon. The specifics objectives are to:
- To examine the impact of warehouse infrastructure on the efficiency of maritime transport operations at the Port of Douala.
- To analyze the relationship between warehouse management practices and cargo handling performance at the port.
- To assess how warehouse capacity and utilization affect port congestion and maritime transport delays.
- To identify and recommend technological and policy-based strategies for improving warehouse efficiency and enhancing maritime transport at the Port of Douala.
