Water scarcity is a pressing global challenge, exacerbated by climate change, population growth, and poor management practices. According to the United Nations (2018), over 2 billion people lack reliable access to safe drinking water, highlighting the urgency of effective water management strategies worldwide. This situation is particularly alarming in developing countries, where inadequate infrastructure, pollution, and inefficient use compound the crisis.
In the developed world, advanced technologies and substantial investments in water management have led to efficient systems for water supply, treatment, and distribution. Countries like Canada and Germany exemplify effective governance and infrastructure, relying on a combination of treatment facilities and regulatory frameworks to ensure sustainable water resources. This success contrasts sharply with challenges faced in less economically developed regions, where water access is often restricted by economic and institutional limitations.
In the underdeveloped world, particularly in parts of Africa, water management issues are compounded by factors such as poverty, political instability, and limited technical expertise. Many communities depend on surface water or shallow wells, which are frequently contaminated. According to the World Bank (2020), inadequate sanitation and unsafe drinking water are major contributors to preventable diseases, significantly impacting public health and economic development.
Africa, often characterized by water scarcity, faces severe challenges related to water management. Rapid urbanization, climate variability, and inadequate infrastructure have stressed existing water resources. The African Union (2019) emphasizes integrated water management as a critical strategy for addressing these issues across the continent, suggesting that regional cooperation is vital for effective governance of water resources.
In Cameroon, the situation mirrors broader African trends. The country experiences significant disparities in water access, with urban areas generally better served than rural ones. According to the Cameroon Ministry of Water and Energy (2021), the current water supply system is overwhelmed, leading to intermittent supply and systemic failures. This impacts not only households but also student residential areas, where accessibility to clean water is crucial for health and academic success.
The North West region of Cameroon, known for its rich biodiversity and resource potential, has faced internal conflict, further straining water management systems. This region struggles with an increased population density, especially in urban student areas, putting pressure on local water resources and infrastructure. Recent studies indicate that the youth population, primarily students, faces significant challenges in accessing clean water, which directly affects their academic performance and well-being. Bambili, a student town within the North West region, further exemplifies these challenges. The rapid establishment of universities has increased the demand for water supply, outpacing local government capabilities to provide adequate services. A study by Ngoh (2022) highlighted that students often resort to unreliable sources, compromising their health and academic performance.
Firestone water management and local governance structures in Bambili need to be assessed to develop effective strategies tailored to the unique challenges posed by the student population. Stakeholder collaboration, involving local authorities, educational institutions, and student bodies, is essential for creating sustainable solutions that ensure reliable water supply while reducing health risks.
Recognizing the importance of water in educational settings, this study seeks to explore effective water management strategies specifically in Bambili, bringing to light the experiences and challenges faced by students. Through examining existing frameworks and innovative approaches, the research aims to contribute meaningful recommendations for sustainable water management tailored to student residential areas in Bambili.
In conclusion, addressing water management in student residential areas like Bambili is critical not only for improving living conditions but also for fostering academic success. By studying these dynamics, the research will add to the growing body of literature focused on water management strategies in developing contexts and propose actionable interventions.
1.2 Presentation of the Study Area
Bambili is a locality situated in the North-West region of Cameroon, specifically within the Tubah subdivision of the Mezam department. It is located at 5° 59′ 22″ N latitude and 10° 15′ 02″ E longitude, placing it at an altitude of around 1,558 meters above sea level. This elevation situates Bambili in a mountainous area that is part of the Western Highlands of Cameroon. The town is approximately 10 kilometers from the regional capital, Bamenda, making it accessible yet distinct in its cultural and environmental characteristics. The geographical positioning of Bambili not only contributes to its scenic beauty but also influences its climate, biodiversity, and agricultural practices (Ngwa, J.P,2018)

Climate
Bambili experiences a tropical highland climate, which is characterized by moderate temperatures and significant rainfall throughout the year. The region typically has two main seasons: the rainy season and the dry season. The rainy season generally spans from March to October, during which the area receives substantial precipitation, averaging between 1,500 to 2,000 mm annually. This abundant rainfall supports lush vegetation and is vital for agriculture, as it provides the necessary moisture for various crops. Temperatures in Bambili are generally mild due to its elevation. Average temperatures range from about 15°C to 25°C, with cooler nights that can drop significantly lower. The climate not only supports diverse agricultural activities but also fosters a rich array of flora and fauna unique to highland ecosystems. The combination of altitude and rainfall creates a microclimate that is conducive to growing a variety of crops, including maize, beans, and other staples that are essential for local livelihoods (Mokube, D.2019).
Relief and Drainage
The relief of Bambili is predominantly hilly and mountainous, forming part of the broader Western Highlands of Cameroon. This mountainous terrain features steep slopes and valleys that contribute to the area’s dramatic landscapes. The elevation creates a series of microclimates within the locality, influencing both weather patterns and vegetation types. In terms of drainage, Bambili is traversed by several small rivers and streams that flow into larger water bodies in the region. These watercourses are essential for irrigation and provide water for domestic use. The topography facilitates natural drainage patterns that are crucial for agriculture, as they help prevent waterlogging in fields while ensuring adequate moisture levels for crops. However, the steep terrain can also lead to soil erosion during heavy rains, posing challenges for sustainable land use (Ngwa, N.2012).
Vegetation and Soil
The vegetation in Bambili is primarily characterized by montane forests that are rich in biodiversity. These forests are home to various species of trees, shrubs, and undergrowth typical of highland areas. The lush greenery not only provides habitat for numerous wildlife species but also plays a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Agricultural land in Bambili benefits from fertile volcanic soils that enhance productivity. Farmers cultivate crops such as maize, beans, potatoes, and various tubers on these fertile lands. Population Trend
The population trend in Bambili has shown fluctuations over the years due to various factors including migration patterns and natural population growth. According to census data from 2005, Bambili had approximately 5,641 inhabitants. More recent estimates suggest that the population could be between 6,600 and 30,000 people depending on how one defines the locality versus broader community boundaries. This growth is attributed to several factors: first, there has been an influx of people moving from rural areas seeking better economic opportunities; second, natural population increase due to higher birth rates contributes significantly to demographic changes. Additionally, urbanization trends have influenced migration patterns as individuals seek access to education and healthcare services available in larger towns like Bamenda(Ngwa, Samuel. 2020).
Human
Bambili, is characterized by a diverse range of human activities primarily influenced by its geography and cultural context. In terms of Agriculture, the predominant activity in Bambili, the fertile soil supports the cultivation of crops such as maize, beans, and cassava. The region’s climate is suitable for both subsistence farming and cash crops, including coffee and tea.
Bambili is home to several educational institutions, including the University of Bambili, which attracts students from various regions. This fosters a vibrant academic community and contributes to the local economy.This village has markets where local produce and goods are exchanged. This trade supports the livelihoods of many residents and promotes local craftsmanship.
The Bambili community is rich in cultural traditions, including festivals, dances, and ceremonies that reflect the heritage of the people and their connection to the land. These activities play a crucial role in community bonding and identity reinforcement. Local artisans engage in traditional crafts, producing items that reflect the cultural practices of the region, such as weaving and pottery.
Community Services,Healthcare services, though limited, are available to the local population, and efforts are being made to improve educational and social services. Bambili’s human activities are centered around agriculture, education, trade, and cultural practices, contributing to the community’s livelihood and social cohesion.

Bambili often faces Water Scarcity, leading to inconsistent water supply, and water shortages, especially during the dry seasons. This affects student living conditions and hygiene (Suleiman et al., 2021). Furthermore the existing water supply infrastructure may be outdated or insufficient to meet the growing demand from student populations, resulting in frequent disruptions (Njeuma & Ashu, 2020). In addition, Contaminated of water sources pose health risks, with inadequate treatment facilities exacerbating the problem, particularly in high-density residential settings (Ngwa et al., 2019).In an effort to provide safe drinking water to the rural and urban dwellers, the government of Cameroon in conjunction with development partners, Non-Governmental organization (NGO’s), Community Based Organization (CBO’s)and some individuals (Atlantic Drilling Company) have exploited the groundwater reserves since groundwater is believed to be cleaner and there fore do not need further chemical treatment before consumption. Several practices such as fertilizer application, agrochemicals, abandoned or inactive mine site, septic tanks, landfill, if not properly managed could result in the contamination of groundwater. Microbiological health risks remain associated with many aspects of water use. some micro organisms are native or adapted to saturated sediments and rock, and are present in Significant numbers in most water supply aquifers and even deep geological formations. Bio-film formation sometimes encourages the growing of bacteria in wells and groundwater. The quality of water in boreholes is also affected by the presence of heavy metals such as Pb, Mn, CD Cu, Fe, Zn, K, NI, and Na. Meteorological events and pollution are a few of the external factors,which affect physicochemical parameters such as temperature, pH, and turbidity or the water. Sudden changes in these parameters may be indicative of changing conditions in the water. Internal factors on the other hand include events that occur between and within bacterial and plankton populations in the water body. The groundwater resource of the country has been fairly assessed in terms of borehole yield, static water levels and water quality in some parts of the country, most of the boreholes since construction have scarcely been maintained, rehabilitated or any major assessment carried out on the quality of water pumped from it and what health effect this water have on the consumers.
